Formentera thanks to a clever control of the local Institutions, has limited the construction of massive Hotels,Aparthotels and Tourist Residences to a minimum and all that made it different than her busy sister Ibiza.

The best period to spend holidays in this island is June, but also September is an excellent period,July and August are really two months of very high occupation with many risks of overbooking, due to the high touristic request and obviously the island is packed by  massive flows of tourism, the rest of the year is pretty peaceful and the mild climate permits to spend very peaceful stays in contact with a unique nature enjoying
a very special place.

So close geographically to Ibiza and so so far for a different as lifestyle, urbanisations and concepts of holidays,Formentera, remains silent, almost intact,no tall buildings,no Mega disco bars or huge clubs,no daily crazy parties...

The delightful climate offers an average temperature of 22º  annually, white sands, the waters in a short distance of 5,0,/ 6,0 kilometres can change their tonallity of colour from azure to emerald and also deep blue, friendly people and a pleasant place with the opportunity to have a complete view on each end of the island due its small size.

The human presence in Formentera began about 4,000 years ago as happened with the other Balearic Islands,Formentera has also seen landing on its shores different civilisations, despite  those achievements remain few traces in the memory, the remains of primitive people are better preserved as the tomb of  Ca Na Costa a Megalithic rest dated over 2000 BC and some remains of pottery of the same period in Ca Sa Nostra in La Mola area.

Formentera and Ibiza lived parallel lifes during the explorations and rules of Greeks,Romans,Arabs,Aragons and Catalans.During the Greek period, the island was called Phityusas, which name means full of pine trees and  later it was also called Ophiussa for the presence of some rectiles and visiting the island you can see many green lizards, and for that the nickname of the island is The island of lizards.

Under Roman rule the island was called Frumentaria, for the great quantity of wheat that the land produced and offered to the former markets and from the ancient Latin- Roman name derives the current name Formentera. The Romans created an important port developing the trade of wheat with the other nearest islands and they left on that land a fortress called Castell Can Pins.

That building was used mainly for defencive purposes, looking at the structure can be deduced that during a time the island had fixed a few detachments of Roman soldiers. After the Roman Empire fall, Formentera suffered several incursions by Vandals,Visigoths and pirates from North Africa and only until the Arab domination it came back to flourish.

The Moorish called the island Al Koluyunka for the presence of sheep farms and they made a great activity on the island, which still remains today, consisting in new systems of irrigation, pottery and ceramic activities were also transmitted to the locals, including was developed a maritime trade towards the mainland. In the year 1235 Guillermo de Montgri, Archbishop of Tarragona, conquered Formentera and 10 years later,Montgrí Berenguer Renart was committed to repopulate the island.

The Catalan people who started to live in the island but without to develop large villages, built a small Romanesque Chapel called Sa Tanca Vella erected in the year 1336 in the place which today there is the town of Sant Francesc Xavier.

During the 15th and 16th century,Formentera was almost uninhabited, due to the danger which meant for people, new intense attacks by ordes of pirates, who had made the island a kind of refuge and place of supply of certain foods, wood and water and the fact Formentera has four defence towers corroborates it.

In addition to the pirates, the fact that diseases and infections such as a plague which entered in the island, it made Formentera a place not too suitable as habitat.Until the year 1695 an Ibizan citizen called Marc Ferrer received from the King a territory in Formentera where to develop a village and that event can be considered the first modern stage of the island.

The descendants of those settlers who were married to that family (Ferrer) are the ancestors of most local people. Since there the island began to replenish at a good pace and in a relatively short time it reached approximately 1000 inhabitants and in the course of its history increased to the current 9000 official residents today.Traditionally, people lived on the island of livestock, agriculture, fishing and the extraction of salt, those activities were the main resources before than the advent of the tourism industry.

At the end of the 19th century began to change everything, many men chose to enlist in the liners and cargo boats decided to immigrate to America and Formentera in that period was depopulated,it was known as the Isla de Mujeres the Island of Women.

In the the last century, the island's history is more or less parallel to the rest of the country, Formentera also suffered the sad consequences of the civil war which left many things to do and to rebuild.
