Santiago, Chile | To Triple Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport Operational Capacity by 2050

Santiago, the capital and largest city of Chile is managing the expansion of the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport also known as Santiago International Airport and Nuevo Pudahuel Airport, located in Pudahuel. 15 km north - west of downtown Santiago, the country’s largest avation facility.

This initiative is not only an infrastructure work, it is a strategic commitment to turn it into a true world - class hub. The basic design stage is already in tender and the objective is clear: to triple its operational capacity by 2050.

This operation more than a remodel is a total transformation, among the works contemplated is the construction of a third runway, a new passenger terminal and a specific enclosure for air cargo that will allow the airport to go from serving 38 million passengers per year, its current capacity to 84 million, and from 42 to 125 operations per hour.

This updated master plan aims doubling the surface area of the airport, from 1.070 to 2.368 hectares, with an estimated investment of $4 billion, which includes the costs of expropriations, a development that is expected to be carried out between 2035 and 2050.

The built area will expand from the current 380.000 square metres to more than one million and aircraft parking spaces will grow from 56 to 152 positions.

The maintenance area and the facilities of the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics will be located on the west side of the new runway. For its part, the space intended for civil aviation will be moved top the east of the first existing runway.

The movement of cargo will also be optimized. The current enclosure will be replaced by a new one, which will allow the construction of the two pending breakwaters of the second passenger terminal.

The design includes three new road accesses. One to the west corresponding to El Noviciado Road, one to the north along Lo Boza Road, and another to the south exclusively for trucks that will serve the cargo terminal.

In addition, a light rail will be integrated that will connect the terminals with each other and with Santiago Metro network, improving the airport's internal mobility.

Sustainability is at the heart of the project. One of the pillars of the expansion is environmental commitment and the projected infrastructure will have the CES, the Sustainable Building Certification and will incorporate strategies for energy efficiency, waste reduction and reduction of polluting emissions.

Likewise, a ring of green areas will be built with parks, trails, multi - courts and playground for better coexistence with the surrounding urban sectors and the installation of renewable energy generators in the vicinity of the airport is also planned.

Since 2010 demand at Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport has grown by 10% per year, except for the pandemic period. For this reason, the study of the master plan concluded that expanding is more efficient than building a second airport in the central macrozone, a decision that is based on financial, operational and social profitability factors.

The Airports Directorate has already put out to tender the reference preliminary project, which will include an environmental impact study and will be developed until 2030. Then will come the expropriations and the engineering of details, to begin with the first works in the middle of the next decade.

The Minister of Public Works, Jessica López stressed that this is one of the most relevant projects for the future of air connectivity in the country. They are long - term works that must be precisely defined and one of the priorities will be to increase the capacity for air cargo that Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport processes today.

With this ambitious plan, the Chilean capital is preparing for a qualitative leap in airport infrastructure, positioning its main airport as an engine of regional development and a key node in air transport on the continent.
