Barrier Reef Reserve System, Belize | Natural Treasure and a Seal of Pride and Conservation of the Country

Belize’s Barrier Reef Reserve System, a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of the small Central American country facing the Caribbean Sea, roughly 300 metres offshore in the north and 40 kilometres in the south within the nation limits, and encompassing three of the four existing atolls in the American continent, turning it into a biodiversity show  is a natural treasure and seal of pride and conservation of the country.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System of almost 300 kilometres in extension, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, is comprised of seven protected areas such as Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve, Blue Hole Natural Monument, Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, South Water Caye Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef Marine Reserve, Laughing Bird Caye National Park and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve.

The seven protected areas that constitute this unique ecosystem comprise 12% of the entire Reef Complex, is the largest in the Atlantic - Caribbean region and it represents the second largest reef system in the world.

Referred to “as the most remarkable reef in the West Indies" by Charles Darwin, famed British naturalist, geologist, and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology, this reef complex is comprised of approximately 450 sand and mangrove groves and outside it contains three atolls such as Turneffe Islands, Lighthouse Reef and Glover’s reef.

Home to an important habitat for a number of species such as the West Indian manatee, green turtle, hawksbill turtle, loggerhead turtle, and the American crocodile as well as endemic and migratory birds which reproduce in the littoral forests of cayes, atolls and coastal areas among them the brown pelicans, in its bottoms there are 178 species of vascular plants, 247 of marine flora, 500 variety of fish, 65 of corals and 350 of molluscs.

In 2021 the Belizean authorities, together with international institutions such as World Wildlife Fund, inaugurated the Barrier Reef’s brand and identity manual, a decision that seeks to strengthen its value fof both tourism and Belizeans, placing the barrier as an icon of sustainability and protection and a seal of pride and conservation for the country.

This strategy not only promotes responsible tourism Belize’s main attraction, but also recognizes the economic and social value of the reef, essential for the lives of more than 190.000 people who enjoy its benefits.

Despite protective measures taken by local authorities and international bodies, Belize's reefs are threatened by ocean pollution, uncontrolled tourism, maritime traffic and fishing.

Other threats include hurricanes, global warming and rising ocean temperatures. These events are the cause of coral bleaching, which since 1998 has affected about 40% of the reef.

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is not just a tourist destination, but a living heritage that must be protected as a commitment to a sustainable future for humanity.

Norway | To Introduce a Visitor Fee for Tourism Starting in Summer 2026

Norway, a popular tourist destination in Scandinavia, known for its stunning natural landscapes, including dramatic fjords of the west coast, mountains, glaciers, the Arctic with the magic of the northern lights will  introduce a visitor fee starting in summer 2026.

The Nordic country is experiencing a strong recovery, with significant growth in both international and domestic tourism. Projections indicate a continued upward trend, with tourists arrivals expected to reach 6.5 million by 2028.

The sector is also making a substantial contribution to Norway's GDP, surpassing pre - pandemic levels. In 2024 the country recorded 6.20 million international arrivals and Tourism authorities expect to welcome approximately 6.28 million international visitors in 2025.

Europe currently represents 80% of all arrivals with leading inbound market being Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark and Great Britain.

Although these remarkable performances and tourism numbers climbing steadily, Norway is preparing to introduce a tourist tax in summer 2026 with the aim to safeguard and preserve its natural treasures and alleviate strain on local infrastructure.

In this way, under newly approved legislation, select municipalities can impose a 3% fee on overnight stays and the fee will appear on hotel bills and short - term rentals such as Airbnb. Also cruise passengers will be subject to the fee while campsites and marinas will be exempt.

The move comes after Norway's Parliament rejected a proposal for a nationwide hotel tax and it opted for a targeted, locally applied measure.

For the implementation of the tax, the municipalities must demonstrate that tourism is putting significant pressure on public facilities and they are also required to submit detailed plans on how the funds will be used, subject to the review by the government.

The first cities expected to adopt this measure include Bergen, Tromsø and possibly the capital of the country Oslo, and iconic sites like Lofoten Islands and the Geirangerfjord are also likely candidates.

With this move Norway tourism - related services will be the exclusive users of the tax revenue. It would include trail maintenance, public toilets, waste management, information systems and local governments will also have the flexibility to adjust the tax seasonally.

A formal review of the legislation will happen three years after its implementation, allowing adjustments based on its impact and effectiveness.

Norwegian Hospitality Association CEO, Kristin Krohn Devold welcomed the decision, pleased that the government avoided a blanket hotel tax and stating that this approach allows for targeted action where it's truly needed. The common goal is for this tax to remain the exception, not the rule.

Sombrero, Anguilla | Idyllic Caribbean Island Dedicated Exclusively to Protect Rare Fauna Species and Thousands of Seabirds

Sombrero, also kown as Hat Island for its peculiar, hat  shaped rock formation, part of the British Overseas Overseas Terrritory of Anguilla, the northermost island of the Lesser Antilles, located 54 kilometres north - west of Anguilla across the Dog and Prickly Pear Passage, a hidden diving gem on the quite site of Anilao boasting spectacular, unspoiled reefs with beautiful soft and hard corals is also an idyllic Caribbean island dedicated exclusively to protect rare fauna species and thousands of seabirds.

The island  is 1.67 kilometres long north - south and 0.38 kilometres wide accessible only by boat and with prior authorization from the ANT, the Anguilla National Trust, a 90 - minute boat ride from the main island, Sombrero is almost a third of the way between Anguilla and Anegada in the British Virgin Islands.

Access to Sombrero is challenging, the boat approaches a steel ladder fixed to the rock, and visitors must climb to the of the cliff. Only the most determined and with good mobility should venture out.

A structure with an authomated lighthouse marks the eastern end of Sombrero, at the transition point between the Caribbean and the Atlantic, the landscape is reminiscent of the lunar surface, with little vegetation, ruins of ancient buildings, and thousands of seabirds making up the scenery.

Anguilla National Trust conservation agents always accompany the visits top ensure the ecosystem remains intact, nothing is taken to the island and nothing is left behind, a perfect example of sustainable tourism with an unforgettable and unique experience.

Totally inhabited, the 94 - acre island is a flat rock formation that was named "Sombrero" Spanish word meaning hat because it was it was overgrown in vegetation in the past and reminiscent of the shape of a hat.

The island was of relevant importance during the second half of the 19th century for its guano reserves; it has been estimated that from 1870 onwards about 3000 tons of phosphate were extracted per year, but around 1890 the reserves of this small Caribbean island were exhausted and it lost its importance.

Nowadays Sombrero is dedicated exclusively to the preservation of seabirds and unique species, including the Sombrero island bee, the Sombrero Island wind scorpion and critically endangered Sombrero ground lizard, a rare reptile identified as Pholidoscelis Corvinus found nowhere else in the world.

In 2018 it was estimated that fewer than 100 individuals of Sombrero ground lizards were left in the wild, it was on the very brink of extinction.

In 2021 Fauna & Flora, Anguillas National Trust and Re: wild stepped in to help the Sombrero ground lizard and its island habitat to recover. Fast forward three years and results are already promising.

A recent survey has revealed the population of the Sombrero ground lizard is now estimated at more than 1.600, a rapid recovery and an encouraging sign of hope for the future of the rare reptile.

For birdwatchers, this secluded corner is a true paradise, with no beaches or easy landing points, the visit is infrequent, and the few visitors who do arrive are greeted by surprisingly calm wildlife, which allows for great closeness, even during the nesting period.

The island is home to impressive bird colonies of regional and global importance, such as the Sooty Terns, Brown Noddi and Brown Booby.

Anguilla National Trust conservation has been working on removing invasive species, reintroducing native plants to restore soil and sustain local wildlife.

Species such as sea beans, beach grapes, and cacti are being reintroduced, although they face the voracious appetite of local birds, who find the seedling quite appetizing.

In addition, Sombrero is the first place in Anguilla to be recognized as a Ramsar Site, an international title awarded to wetlands of great ecological importance and it has also been declared an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.

Beyond Sombrero, Anguilla National Trust organizes excursions to other islets and wetlands on the time of the year.

The presence of migratory birds is a highlight in Anguilla and one of the most popular destinations to observe them is Prickly Pear Cay located 9.6 kilometres from the Anguillan mainland, also popular among swimmers and snorkelers looking for a less crowded experience.

Privately owned and surrounded by a marine park, it offers a restaurant, snorkeling areas and, inland is home to birds such as magpies, seagulls and terns. As in Sombrero in this place, the ANT has also combated invasive species and has reintroduced native iguanas threatened by exotic green iguanas.

At the East Pond Conservation Area, it is possible to observe curlews, herons, sandpipers, and other waterfowl feeding in shallow, brackish waters. The Anguilla National Trust has also developed a native forest there to further enrich the habitat.

Another preserved site of importance is Big Spring, which contains more than 100 petroglyphs carved by the island's first inhabitants, offering a direct connection to millenia of history.

For all those who enjoy gentle hikes, the Anguilla National Trust also promote short, educational trails. One of them, lasting 1 1/2 hours, is focused on Anguilla's pollinators and include a visit to Pitch Apple Cave, where participants learn about the role of bats in local agriculture.

Anguilla offers a multitude of attractions and hidden gems and the ANT is on the front lines of protecting the island's wildlife and natural resources, essential work for everyone's future.
