Cannes, France | To Introduce Cruise Ship Limits

Cannes, a famous resort town on the French Riviera in the Alpes - Maritime Department, famed for its international film festival, the iconic Boulevard de la Croisette, curving along the Mediterranean coast lined with sandy beaches, upmarket boutiques and palatial hotels will introduce cruise ships limits.

The glamorous centre of the Côte d' Azur has become the latest famous European destination to join the growing global backlash against overtourism by imposing what its council calls "drastic regulations" on cruise ships.

The nearby city of Nice announced limits on cruise ship earlier this year as well as some other important cities in Europe including Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice.

From the start of 2026 only ships with fewer than 1.000 passengers will be allowed in the port of Cannes, with a maximum of 6.000 passengers disembarking per day, and the number of ships carrying more than 5.000 passengers will be cut by 48% next year.

Larger ships are not totally banned from visiting but will have to tender further out at sea. This is already the case for some of the largest ships now as the port can not accommodate the largest vessels.

The Cannes city council voted for new limits following restrictions in Nice and Villefranche - sur-– Mer.

Mayor David Lisnard said that Cannes has become a major cruise ship destination, with real economic benefits. It's not about banning cruise ships, but about regulations and setting guidelines for their navigation.

The tax, which varied based on distance, is being scapped to make flights more affordable and attract airlines back to Sweden.

Since its implementation, the number of air passengers has fallen by a third and several regional airports have closed.

The Swedish government has reversed course on one of its pioneering policies : levying a tax on commercial aviation. The Scandinavian country to this day around €60 per plane ticket and passenger, depending on the distance of the flight, a fee that was created six years ago.

At the time of its creation, it was experiencing a real environmental furore with the idea of publicly embarrassing those flew by plane, with Greta Thunberg, famous climate and political activist initially known for challenging world leaders to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of climate change, as an an example of the situation generated.

The Swedish aviation tax was actually a success, if it was intended to reduce flights, because the number of passengers in the country fell by a third.

The original tax contributed to a decrease in air traffic, particularly affecting smaller, regional airports, some of them were close and train become more popular.

Now airlines are celebrating the policy change, with Ryanair waiting to launch a new flight plan in the Nordic country. The Irish company uses the Swedish example top criticize Denmark, where a similar tax has just been approved.

In any case, the big beneficiary of the abolition of the aviation climate tax is SAS, the region's most important airline, which applauds the decision without nuance that this will push it more than ever in its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.

Mount Fuji, Japan | Instituted New Rules for Climbing the Peak with only a License and Test

Japanese authorities have just instituted new rules for climbing the iconic Mont Fuji, the tallest peak of the country standing at 3.776 metres along any of its four main paths, requiring tourists to have a $27 permit and pass a test that confirms they understand important information about hiking safety and local customs in the area and to establish a measure to deter overtourism.

The large number of visitors has resulted in significant littering and other negative environmental impacts on the mount and despite the new restrictions, over 200.000 climbers still attempt top reach the summit of Mount Fuji each season, a high number of them for sunrise without proper rest, leading to safety concerns, highlighting the need for further measures.

Overcrowding has also affected local communities, with residents of Fujikawaguchiko blocking views of the mountain to stop tourists from gathering in certain areas and this new measure hopes to deter the invasion of visitors and ensure the security protocols at the site are followed.

Mout Fuji, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site,  is an active volcano about 100 kilometres southwest of the capital of the country, Tokyo, a mountain that is the result of volcanic activity that began approximately 100. 000 years ago.

Commonly called " Fuji – san" , a pilgrimage site for centuries, this peak is considered one of Japan's 3 sacred mountains, its iconic profile is the subject of numerous works of art, notably Edo Period prints by Hokusai and Hiroshige and summit hikes remain a popular activity.

Overtourism continues to be a major problem for populations in many parts of the world, and Mount Fuji is no exception to the rule, the dramatic increase in the number of visitors is causing pollution and safety problems.

The mount is becoming known as a "mountain of garbage" as many people leave their garbage behind without considering the negative effects it has on the regional flora and fauna.

To help clean up the mountain and preserve its environment, Japanese authorities had already introduced in 2024, a fee and maximum limit on daily visitors.

Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi, a prefecture that oversees hiking activities at this emblematic peak said that by strongly promoting comprehensive safety measures to climb Mount Fuji will ensure that this treasure of the world is passed on to future generations.

Remote workers interested in living among scenic medieval towns, glacial lakes, forested areas and pristine Alpine valleys can soon do so using a new digital nomad visa working in a very attractive EU nation that shares its borders with Austria, Croatia, Hungary and Italy.

Scheduled to come into force in November 2025, the visa will be intended for citizens from outside the European Union and the European Economic Area, allowing one - year residential stays in Slovenia for work purposes, as long as applicants are employed by a foreign company or working as freeleancers exclusively for clients outside the country.

The visa for digital nomads will be valid for only 12 months and cannot be renewed consecutively, which means that remote workers who want to extend their stay will have to leave the country and wait six months after the end of the visa before being able to apply again.

This status, unprecedented in Slovenia, will also allow visa holders to take their family members with them, provided that none of them is working in the country.

Visa requirements require applicants that they have sufficient income to support not only themselves but also their family members.

Details about the minimum amount of income required have not yet been released, but potential candidates can already start gathering evidence of their income.

Those who are already in Slovenia and are seduced by this opportunity can also apply for the digital nomad visa with the local government, indicating to the authorities that these applicants will receive a temporary residence certificate that covers the period of processing the documents.

It should be noted that visa programs for digital nomads have been gaining popularity in recent years, following the increase in the number of followers of itinerant lifestyles since the COVID – 19 pandemic, which has changed the working conditions and expectations of workers around the world.

This prestigious international recognition is the result of the ongoing effoirts of the Antigua and Barbuda Authority's UK team, led by the Direrctor for the United Kingdom and Europe, Cherrie Osborne to highlight the destination's sustainability initiatives in one of its main markets.

The team worked closely with the media to increase the visibility of the Coral Reef Restoration Project, culminating in its selection by the Wanderlust editorial board for the 2025 list.

The Director said that the Coral Reef Restoration Project is a shining example of the long – term environmental work being done in Antigua and Barbuda and it is a privilege to see this work recognized by a publication as influential as Wanderlust.

During the World Travel Market 2024, the project was also presented at the Antigua and Barbuda booth through an immersive virtual reality experience on reef restoration, a key moment in the campaign in Great Britain to promote sustainable tourism.

Main benefits of the initiative are :

•    Strengthening local fisheries and protecting coastal areas
