The city situated on a plain by the Bayamo River was founded on November 5,  1513 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar, Spanish conquistador, first ruler of Cuba from 1511 until his death in 1524, and founder of Cuba’s first seven cities.

Bayamo originally known as “San Salvador de Bayamo” was the second centre to be founded on the island by the colonizers, highlighting with its history and cultural relevance the award achieved by Cuba as best cultural destination in the Caribbean in a very special day for the country.

Cape Maclear, Malawi | Divers Remove Lake Malawi’s Underwater Waste to Protect Biodiversity and Tourism

Local divers in Cape Maclear, a town on Malawi’s Nankumba Peninsula, at the southern end of Lake Malawi, surrounded by forested mountains, known for its sandy beaches and stunning granite rocks within Lake Malawi Park are removing underwater waste in the Malawi Lake through a HEEED - led project launched in 2023 to improve visibility for diving,  snorkeling and protect biodiversity and tourism.

Lake Malawi is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system located between Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, is the fourth largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, the ninth largest lake in the world and the third largest and second deepest lake in the African continent.

Home to more species of fish than any other lake in the world, including at least 700 species of chichlids, a large, diverse, and widespread family of percomorph fish. Lake Malawi with its deep, clear waters and mountain backdrop is part of of Lake Malawi National Park, a protected reserve at the southern end of the lake, created with purpose of protecting the environment fish and aquatic habitats.

The Lake Malawi National Park was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, being of global importance for biodiversity conservation due particularly to its fish diversity with many hundreds of fish species, nearly all endemic.

To protect this treasure fifteen trained volunteers collect waste three times a week and use the skills and equipment to work as underwater tour guides, helping sustain the visitor experience.

Malawi’s environment regulator, MEPA, the principal agency for the protection and management of environment and natural resources, says it is working with universities to map underwater hotspots to guide a broader clean - up.

Waste build - up is driven by dumping and weak upland waste systems across the tri - national shoreline. A 2015 - 2018 beach study recorded nearly 500.000 litter items over 32 hectares, 80% plastic, while Malawi produces about 75.000 tonnes of plastic annually, most of it single - use.

Authorities have begun enoforcing a ban on thin plastic and community schemes are recycling and upcycling materials, with HEED exploring partnership with Clewat, a Finnish company based in Kokkola specializes on solving the plastic waste, excess biomass, oil spills and other pollution problems on seas, rivers and lakes, for larger - scale collection.

The measures aim to safeguard Lake Malawi, UNESCO - listed lake’s appeal and maintain tourism revenues at one of Malawi’s busiest beach destinations.

Taposiris Magna, Egypt | Ancient Submerged Port Discovery off Egypt’s Coast Brings Archaeologists Closer to Cleopatra VII’s Lost Tomb

A team of archaeologists exploring the northern coast of Egypt have uncovered the remains of a vast, submerged port near the ancient city of Taposiris Magna, a find that may take them closer than ever to locating the tomb of Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, iconic Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, as reported by Bolivia TV.

Taposiris Magna, also known as Tapusir Magna, situated around 45 kilometres west of Alexandria, Egypt’s principal seaport, the second largest city after Cairo, and the largest centre on the Mediterranean coast, founded in 331 BC by Alexander the Great.

The ancient city was established by Pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus between 280 and 270 BC, and was along believed to have been both a relevant religious and trading centre.

Its name means “great tomb of Osiris”, it features a temple dedicated to Osiris and Isis, a necropolis with various burial styles, an extensive tunnel system connecting Lake Mariout to the Mediterranean Sea, renmants of a Greek temple, a submerged harbour and numerous artifacts such as coins, statues, pottery.

The significant discovery near Taposiris Magna includes underwater structures, including stone buildings over six metres high, columns, concrete blocks, and Ptolemaic anchors and amphorae, suggest that the site once served as a key link between inland and trade routes, Lake Mareotis, and the bustling port of Alexandria, and was also discovered a possible marble head of Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator, the iconic Queen of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt and the last active pharaoh from 51 to 30 BC.

The location of Cleopatra's burial has remained a mystery since her death, but this sunken port might be a key to finding it. This port is directly connected to the temple of Taposiris Magna, and it is thought that the tomb of Cleopatra may be hidden somewhere in the enormous temple complex.

Member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and a descendant of its founder Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general, historian, and successor of Alexander the Great, who went on the found the Ptolemaic Kingdom centred on Egypt, famous in history and drama, Cleopatra actively influenced Roman politics at a crucial period, she came to represent, as did no other woman of antiquity, the prototype of the romantic femme fatale.

The Egyptian queen was also known for her relationship with Julius Caesar, iconic Roman statesman and a member of the First Triumvirate, and later as lover of Marcus Antonious or Mark Antony, a Roman politician, general, and Consul who played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic from a constitutional republic into the autocratic Roman Empire.

According to the archaeological team, the port now lies approximately twelve metres below the Mediterranean Sea, indicating significant geological shifts over the centuries.

Bathymetric and sediment analyses reveal that the coastline, in antiquity stretched four kilometres further out than today, reshaping the understanding of Egypt’s ancient geography.

Over the past two decades, excavations at the site have revealed an array of treasures, from ritual artefacts, oil lamps, and limestone vessels to bronze statuettes, foundation deposits, and hundred of coins bearing the image of Cleopatra herself.

Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, hailed the discovery as proof of the country’s deep historical and maritime heritage, stating that this finding confirms that Egypt’s ancient coasts were not only centres of civilization but strategic gateways for cultural and commercial exchange with the wider world.

The head of the organisation’s rangeland affairs office, Abolghasem Hosseinpour speaking at a meeting of provincial deputies, highlighted the crucial role of rangelands as protective barriers for fragile ecosystems in arid regions.

The official described the rangelands as a “biological belt” that helps curb the spread of desertification, stressing the need for tailored programmes to safeguard and restore degraded areas.

The head of the organization also warned that climate change declining rainfall and shrinking snow cover are placing growing pressure on Iran’s rangelands and stating that so far 7.6 million hectares have been rehabilitated.

The Cayman Islands | “Welcome to vaCay”, a Global Campaign to Redefine the Identity of the Destination Launched

The Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory which encompasses 3 islands in the western Caribbean zone, a stunning tropical and sunny gateway in the Greater Antilles, highlighted by idyllic beaches, renowned scuba diving and snorkerling sites, a paradise for sailing, boasting a diverse wildlife, great food and a vibrant atmosphere through its Department of Tourism officially launched “Welcome to vaCay” a global campaign to redefine the identity of the destination.

With an approach that breaks the mold of traditional tourism marketing, the initiative aims to position the Cayman Islands as the right antidote to overcrowded vacations, offering an authentic, revitalizing, and stress - free experience.

This new brand campaign, which debuted on 7th October 2025 focuses on the idea that a great vacation doesn’t need to be busy and the three islands nation is encouraging travellers and the advisors who sell it to remember the value of slowing down.

Director of tourism for the Cayman Islands, Rosa Harris said that the idea for “Welcome to vaCay” came from a simple truth : vacation is broken.” What was once restorative has become another source of stress, packed itineraries and pressure to “do it all”. The Cayman Islands wanted to change that narrative and remind travellers what a true escape feels like : no alarms no lists, no stress.

“Welcome to vaCay” will have global reach, an emphasis will be placed on key U.S. markets such as Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and New York, and according to the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism will include ads on TV and streaming services as well as full social media rollout.

The head of tourism of the Cayman Islands said that in partnership with the global marketing agency Grey New York which produced a 30 - second spot narrated by Caymanian actress Rita Estevanovich and the directing duo Mathery, with the participation of a team composed of over 85% local talents, Cayman Island Tourism conducted research of 2.000 American tourists that revealed the modern traveller’s fatigue. Nearly 4 in ten (39%) said they return home needing another vacation, while almost half (49%) come back exhausted or stressed.

In contrast, travellers who’ve visited the Cayman Islands describe their experience as relaxing (60%), a clear proof point that the three Islands deliver the antidote travellers are searching for.

Director of tourism for the Cayman Islands stated that travel advisors will play a key role in delivering that message. The Tourist Board of the Caymans is currently working on assets and resources for travel agents that will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

The campaign centres around aspects of the Cayman Islands aspects that have to be always highlighted such as the effortless luxury that can be found in the archipelago, the standout food scene, experiences suitable for all generations and vibrant local culture, all of which is familiar to travel advisors who sell the Cayman Islands as destination.

For starters, a refresh of VisitCaymanislands.com features influencer itineraries through a partnership with the travel app Steller.  Planners can discover first - hand reviews, suggestions, inspiration and feedback from fellow travellers to recommend to their clients, from places to stay, must - try restaurants to local experience and advises from tour operators.

In addition the campaign theme will be weaved into fam trips, training and co - op marketing. “Welcome to vaCay” will be incorporated into all aspects of the Cayman Tourism so in this way travel advisors can have a full understanding of what the initiative looks like.

According to the Director, the campaigns is a strategy for sustainable, high - value growth, and directly supports the organization growing room stock, increasing average spend and maintaining a strong average length of stay.

The balance between promoting rest and driving revenue may prove to be the campaing’s most interesting test. In targeting “high value travellers” such as couples, multigenerational families and culinary enthusiasts, Cayman Tourism is betting that slower travel can still yield stronger economic results.

The Cayman Tourism Director added that the destination’s goal is to attract travellers who value connection, authenticity and time well spent, visitors who stay longer, spend more, and engage with local culture. Ultimately, this brand evolution meets travellers where they are : ready to slow down and rediscover what vacation should be.

This innovative global initiative marks a new chapter in the identity of the Cayman Islands, highlighting every element of the campaign from its visual narrative to its creative execution to position the destination where vacations finally become vacations once again.
