Rwanda Government launched a project along the Nyungwe – Ruhango Corridor to restore ecosystems and strengthen climate resilience. The government has secured a relevant imvestment of $9 million grant from GEF, the Global Facilty in the country's Southern Province, an initiative, part of the GEF - 8 Ecosystem Restoration Integrated Program, which will be implemented by the Rwanda Environment Management authority.
The project aims to rehabilitate over 2.000 hectares of forests and wetlands, and promote sustainable land management on nearly 9.000 hectares of farmland between Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the oldest rainforests in Africa and the largest expanse of forest in Rwanda, partly abutting the Burundi border in the southwest of the country.
The corridor links this National Park covering 1019 square kilometres of Afromontane forests, bamboo - covered slopes, grasslands and wetlands and Rhuango district in the Southern province with its capital Ruhango town, a large settlement on the road between Butare and Gitarama.
his green corridor is well known to be the territory that feeds two of the world's largest rivers, the Congo and the Nile, and provides significant portion of Rwanda's fresh water.
The project is expected to benefit more than 289.000 people across Ruhango, Nyanza and Nyamagabe Districts, with a focus on improving agricultural productivity, reducing climate risks and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
This initiative is also projected to create over 2.200 jobs, particularly for youth, through green economy activities such as agroforestry, fruit tree planting, and non - timber forest product value chains.
The programme complements wider World Bank - supported conservation investments in Rwanda and supports key goals under the country's National Strategy for Transformation.
