South Africa | To Launch its Fully Digital Electronic Travel Authorisation in September 2025

South Africa will launch its fully digital Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system by the end of September 2025, according to Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber marking a major leap forward in modernising the country's visa processing.

Initially applicable for short - term visits of up to 90  days, the ETA system is part of a broader push to digitise the country's immigration framework.

Managed by the Border Management Authority, the ETA will be first implemented at major airports before being extended to other visa categories.

The new  Electronic Travel Authorisation system is designed to improve processing times and security through the use of AI - powered risk monitoring and cybersecurity measures.

The list of eligible nationalities will be announced at the time of launch, with broader visa category coverage planned in future phases.

The ETA is expected to provide a seamless and secure travel experience for International visitors. It aligns South Africa with global digitisation trends in travel, where speed, convenience, and safety are key expectations.

Industry leaders anticipated that the launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation in South Africa could help revive inbound tourism, especially after years of pandemic - related disruptions and travel hesitancy.
