Edinburgh, Scotland, UK | A New Trial Cycle Hire Scheme Has Been Launched in the City

 Edinburgh’s new trial cycle hire scheme has been launched on 22th August, a service provided by Voi, a rapidly growing company, originating from Sweden and revolutionizing the mobility sector. The group specializes in providing state - of – the - art hardware and solutions aimed at creating sustainable transportation options and contributing to the the future of urban development.

In this way public will be able to use the city’s new scheme of dockless - e  bikes from 3rd September via the Voi app.

The contract established between Edinburgh Council and Voi runs for a period of two years with an option to extend for up to a further 18 months and will also run at no cost to the Council.

A typical 20  minute journey on the e - bike will cost £2.20 and there are a range of discounts and concessions for many groups including those on low incomes, people with disabilities, those over the age of 60, blue light workers, veterans, students, apprentices and many more.

In addition to pay as you go fares, Voi operator also offers day passes and multi day passes. Full details on the full ranges, concessions and promotion and a guide to using the scheme are available on Voi’s website.

The new trial cycle hire scheme will start with an initial tranche of around 50 – e bikes in the centre of Edinburgh, and alongside Voi, rider feedback and initial performance data will be assessed.

This will then be used to expand across the city over the coming months, with a target of approximately 800 - e - bikes for the full scheme.

Cycling in Edinburgh is becoming a very popular activity, and recently, the record for daily cycle journey on Leith Walk, a historic and iconic street that serves as the main artery connecting the city’s east end to the vibrant port district of Leith was broken with 2.147 at the Picardy Place counter, a roundabout a short distance from Edinburgh Playhouse and not far from Edinburgh Waverley Train Station.

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Stephen Jenkinson expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating that a cycle hire scheme returned to Edinburgh, thanks to Voi is a highly experienced operator, with many successful schemes across the UK and abroad. 

The new scheme will allow everyone to be able to move around the city in a healthier and more sustainable waythe aim is to ensure that the scheme is accessible for all residents and visitors, knowing that the demand and appetite for cycling is already strong, and getting stronger in Edinburgh.  

Voi’s UK General Manager James Bolton said that the company is excited to set up in Scotland, starting in the historical capital. Voi sees massive amountgs of untapped potential -in Scotland, where people are really looking for affordale, quick and convenient ways to get around.
