RIU Hotels & Resorts, a Spanish family - owned chain company founded in 1953 and headquartered in Palma de Mallorca, specializing in holiday and all - inclusive resorts offering a variety of brands with a range of locations across the globe announced the opening of its first property in Canada, located in Toronto, a dynamic city, capital of the province of Ontario located along Lake Ontario’s northwestern shore, well known for its multiculturalism and cosmopolitan atmosphere, a major centre for arts, culture, and finance, highlighted by its iconic CN Tower, a prominent landmark and former tallest freestanding structure in the world.
The new Hotel Riu Plaza Toronto is located at 30 Widmer Street, in the city’s Entertainment District, a bustling downtown neighbourhood bounded by Queen Street West, Front Street, University Avenue and Spadine Avenue, a short distance from Metro Convention Centre and CN Tower, known for its wide array of restaurants, bars, clubs, theatres and cultural venues like TIFF Bell Lightbox, hosting concerts, musicals and the Toronto International Festival.
The strategic location places the property near other several attractions, such as Rogers Centre Stadium, David Peacaut Square and the Princess of Wales Theatre, in an area that also offers convenient transport connections.
The property is part of a larger development comprising two skyscrapers, each with 49 floors, and the hotel occupies 23 floors of one of these buildings with the remaining floors designated for residential use.
The building’s exterior features a brick base that complements the historic 18th - century architecture of the district, paired with a modern glass structure above.
The hotel’s design features contemporary elements consistent with Riu’s urban hotel line, utilizing a mix of light and dark tones with chrome and beige accents.
The hotel catering to both leisure and business travellers provides 352 comfortable comfortable rooms, a main lobby with a lobby bar on the ground floor, serving snacks and beverages throughout the day, a restaurant located on the second floor, a gym, and a conference room with a capacity for 40 people.
In line with its sustainability efforts, the property employs energy efficiency measures, including cogeneration plants for electricity and thermal energy, as well as initiatives for water conservation and waste reduction.
The opening of the Riu Plaza Toronto is a strategic move for RIU Hotels & Resorts, as Canada represents a very significant market in North America for the company next to Caribbean, Mexican and Central American destinations.
This new hotel is the twelfth in RIU’s urban line, joining locations such as Berlin, Chicago, Dublin, Guadalajara, London, New York, Madrid, Miami, Panama City, and San Francisco. The company is also expanding its presence in New York with a third hotel currently under construction.
