Panama | Consolidation as a Competitive Tourist Destination

Panama’s tourism sector is performing strongly, recovering from the pandemic and showing positive growth with projections for continued expansion in 2025, the Central American country received more than 1.49 million international visitors in the first half of this year consolidating itself as a competitive tourist destination. 

According to a statement from the Tourism Authority of Panama (ATP), that figure represents an increase of 3.7% in relation to the 1.4 million registered in the same period of 2024.

The report also details that tourism of people qualified as touristst, they stay in the country for more than two days, increased 8.4% in the accumulated from January to June, anf totalling more than 1.14 million excursionists. 

The information released also specifies that until June the travellers who entered the country by cruise ships were 199.874 people. In assition the repor details that tourism spending amounted to $3.305 billion, which represented an increase of 7.8% compared to the contribution recorded in the first half of last year.

Data provided reflect that in the first six months of 2025 Tocumen International Airport was the main port of entry, with 1.07 million travellers, an increase of 4.8% compared to 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Panama.

said that between August and September the arrival of visitors to the country has increased and the support of the StopOver program managed by the flag carrier Copa Airlines, allowing passengers to extend their stay in Panama City for 24 hours up helped to reach relevant objectives.

The official added that with the Youth Awards hold on September 25, a high occupancy was recorded and quoted by the newspaper La Prensa, the Admistrator of ATP reiterated that the government goal is to reach three million international visitors this year.

Panama is solidifying its competitive standing by promoting eco - tourism, nature, and sustainable tourism, leveraging its unique biodiversity, and the iconic Panama Canal, and enhancing its infrastructure to attract mid – to high - end tourists.

 The nation’s strategy to enhance its tourism sector also involves developing hiking trails, protecting its vast natural areas, diversification of destinations, and growing its role as a hub for conventions and events, all that supported by significant government and private sector initiatives, such as “Panamá Vive Por Más” campaign with the aim to attract more tourists, offering them high - quality experiences and diverse attractions.
