Meliá Hoteles International | Projects and Inversions for Greater Sustainability of Hotels

Meliá Hoteles International, well-known hotel group based in Palma de Mallorca, is launching "Responsible Business", a strategy that includes projects and initiatives to promote the sustainability of hotel facilities in different areas of action.

The hotel chain led by Gabriel Escarrer promotes the environmental certification of the hotels it owns, rents and third parties under the management regime through the Earthcheck seal.

The group is also assiduously promoting investments in energy efficiency in 64 hotels in Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Dominican Republic and Mexico that have already implemented the project for the monitoring, control and management of the facilities and their energy performance called CO2PERATE, an initiative that has been extended to other 25 hotels under management.

In 2023, a total of over 1.755.000 kilograms of CO2 emissions were avoided, a significant improvement of 10% compared to 2022.

Similarly, the energy savings achieved through this project amounted to over 5.5 kWh with a + 9% compared to the same period two years ago.

Meliá Hoteles International has also made progress in water management through the Magnum project, implementing it in a pilot way in two hotels in the Canary Islands and Mallorca which, through AI, virtually replicates the water systems of hotel facilities, improving the efficiency of water consumption by identifying anomalies and areas for improvement.

Another key aspect to increase sustainability is the circularity plan through compliance with the Balearic Islands Tourism Law and for this reason the hotel group has defined circularity plans in all its hotels in the Balearic Community.

In the field of sustainable mobility, Meliá Hoteles International has expanded the number of charging points for electric vehicles in its hotels, managing to avoid more than 6.390 kilograms of CO2 and also promoting initiatives concerning efficient and sustainable transport initiatives for employees.
