IHG Hotels & Resorts, British multinational company based in Windsor, Berkshire, England, UK has signed an agreement to open its first Candlewood Suites property in Reykjavik, capital and largest city of Iceland, located on the Seltjarnar Peninsula, at the southeastern corner of Faxa Bay, the northermost capital of a sovereign state in the world.
The project is part of a development strategy with ALVA Capital, an investment management company headquartered in London, a partnership that aims to develop up to 500 rooms in Iceland over the three or five years, an initiative that will introduce IHG Hotels & Resorts’s brands, including Holiday Inn Express and InterContinental Hotels to the Nordic region.
The new development will be a conversion of a conversion of a former office into a 53 - room hotel located in Hlíðar, a central, lively and culturally diverse district of Reykjavik, home to the Reykjavik Art Museum Kjarvalsstaðir, which features modern Icelandic paintings and sculptures, and the Klambratún park, a quiet, tree - lined open space with sports courts.
The hotel is expected to open soon, and is situated near Reykjavik’s main pedestrian shopping street near Reykjavik Art Museum Kjarvalsstaðir and Sundhöllin Public Baths allowing guests an easy access to the main attractions of the city.
The Reykjavik property will be part of IHG’s long - stay Suites portfolio, which includes nine Candlewood Suites set to open across Northern Europe. The brand focuses on providing apartment - style accommodations with reliable service, an extended - stay hotel brand that features spacious suites with fully equipped kitchens, a Candlewood Cupboard for snacks and essentials, and complimentary guest laundry.
The brand emphasized a relaxed, home - like environment and provides amenities for long - term stays, including a large workspace in each suites and outdoor grilling areas, offering in addition gym access and weekly housekeeping.
The Reykjavik project marks a strategic expansion for IHG Hotels & Resorts in the Nordic market, leveraging ALVA Capital’s established presence in Iceland, a destination that has experienced significant tourism growth, with approximately 2.3 million international visitors annually.
The new establishment will join IHG Hotels & Resorts’ existing 13 properties in the Scandinavian countries, including locations in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.
