Zanzibar, Tanzania | Moving to Diversify its Tourism Offer Beyond Beach Holidays

Zanzibar’s government has outlined plans to broaden its tourism sector during the first 100 days of its second phase in office, with Acting Minister for Tourism and Heritage Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga announcing a strategic shift beyond traditional beach tourism.

The government is is actively developing new offers diversifying its tourism sector beyond beach holidays to include conference, festival sports, and medical tourism, aiming to boost economic growth and sustainability.

Driven by record 2025 arrivals (917.167 visitors) and high demand, the country is also focusing on cultural heritage, encouraging high –-value investment in dultural assets, museums, and natural sites. as well as with new high - end, and sustainable eco - tourism projects.

In addition Zanzibar is intensifying its international promotion in major trade events that included and will include FITUR, in Madrid, Spain, and World Travel Market in London, UK.

Tourism currently accounts for more than 30% of Zanzibat GDP and supports over 65.000 jobs, underscoring the sector central role in the island’s economy.

At a local level, the government is backing cultural events as the Sauti za Busara festival to promote heritage tourism and community participation.

The diversification drive aligns with the ruling party’s 2025 - 2030 manifesto, with officials emphasizing that growth will be pursued alongside the preservation of Zanzibar’ s cultural and environmental integrity.
