Istanbul - Turkey | Consolidating its Status of Top Destination for International Travellers

 

Istanbul, major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait, a metropolis with a population of nearly 16 million, considered the country's economic, cultural and historic capital, with its old city reflecting cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled this centre, founded as Byzantium in the 7th century BCE by Greek settlers and elevated in 330 CE by the Roman Emperor Constantine the great as his imperial capital becoming the iconic Costantinople, isconsolidating its status of top destination for international travellers.

In 2024, around 18.6 million international tourists visited this megacity, up from 17.4 million the previous, a centre that also in 2022 attracted more than 16.0 million visitors, result of an excellent promotion, strategic tourist campaigns in digital platforms, TV channels and different medias.

The latest data from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture shows that 52.63 million international travellers visited Turkey in 2024, up 6.95% from 2023 and including Turks living abroad, the country welcomed 62.27 million visitors

 Istanbul received 35.3% or all international tourist arrivals to the country, undoubtedly a superb performance for the Turkish metropolis in terms of incoming tourism, followed by the famous resort city of Antalya on the Turkish Riviera which welcomed 15.9 million international visitors, accounting for 30.2% of all international travellers arrivals and in the third pace the northwestern province of Edirne,  which borders Bulgaria and Greece with 4.8 million visitors, while the Aegean province of Muğla attracted 3.7 million tourists.

In terms of tourist market,s last year Istanbul welcomed a total of 1.98 million Russian tourists, who made up the largest group of international visitors, Germans came in second with 1.42 million visitors, up from 1.29 million in 2023 followed by Iranians with 1.15 million visitors.

The number of tourists from the United States of America increased from 853.766 in 2023 to 967.095 last year, while British visitors increased from 701.361 to 794.990.

Istanbul boasts around 3.091 accommodations establishments that cater to travellers with a total capacity of 252.589 beds, leading the national ranking, consolidating the city as one of top destinations in terms of hospitality incoming, offering a large variety of options, satisfying the budgets and the choices of a multitude of visitors coming from abroad, making it a favourite destination in the international scene.
