Paris, the capital of France, the "Ville Lumière", the City Light, major European metropolis and global centre for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture for the fourth year in a row, has been awarded with the title of the most attractive urban destination on the world according to Euromonitor's 2024 ranking.
This special award is created by Euromonitor International, a company founded in 1972 and based in London - UK, specialising in world data analytics and research into market industries, economies and consumers providing truly global insight and figures on thousands of products and services.
European cities continue to top the list, benefiting from a strong tourism infrastructure, as global tourism experiences a remarkable resurgence, cities are increasingly prioritizing sustainable tourism approaches to manage growth and mitigate the impact of overtourism.
Paris has been crowned in 2024 in the annually competition of Euromonitor International Top 100 Destinations Cities index, the report assesses global urban destinations based on 55 indicators covering six key areas such as economic and commercial performance, tourism success, infrastructure, policy and attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.
Six of the top ten ranking are European cities,among them Madrid placed itself in second place, Rome in 4th and Milan in 5th position while the second place was occupied by an Asian city, concretely Tokyo, capital and largest centre of Japan.
The continued success of European destinations can be attributed to their strong tourism infrastructure, which has undoubtedly played a key role in maintaining their high rankings with also a global international arrivals increased by 19% in 2024 indicating robust demand for travel.
Europe among the continents remained the top destination with 793 million international visits while among cities the capital of Thailand, Bangkok topped the global rankings with 32 million arrivals, surpassing pre - pandemic figures, meanwhile global tourism expenditures totaled $1.9 trillion.
In response concerning the theme of overtourism, cities have begun to introduce entrance fees, which encourages year - round visits and incentives sustainable practices.
These initiatives, along with the integration of AI – powered technologies, are transforming urban tourism strategies as destination work to strike a balance between growth and responsible travel.
