Minimundus-Klagenfurt | Unique Tourist Experience visiting The World in Miniature.


Minimundus is one of the great attractions of Klagenfurt, a site which offers a unique tourist experience visiting The World in Miniature, a stunning theme park inaugurated in 1958 with the aim to support with the proceeds benefit Rettet Das Kind, "Save that Child" the Institution which owns that fantastic site.

That beautiful Austrian city of 97,000 inhabitants hosting in its boundaries that attraction is  situated in the stupendous, southernmost State of the Nation, Carinthia on the shore of the Glan river, a right tributary of the Gurk on a scenic hilly plateau at 446,0 metres of altitude in a wide basin north of the Karawanks, a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps, a magnificent land delighting many visitors at first sight. 

Its very strategic, geographic position very close to Italy, Slovenia and Germany corresponds to a territory which historically has always been an important cultural cross road but also natural bridge between Western and Eastern Europe.

That centre in addition boasts a considerable, historic patrimony thanks to the presence of several stunning monuments, museums, art galleries and next to that the chance to enjoy something of alternative as that pleasant, miniature park. 
 
That is a great opportunity for many visitors who apart to live a pleasant day admiring something of highly attractive and educative purchasing the entrance can help many children with difficulties, undoubtedly a positive gesture in that big world with numerous niches called tourism also sensitive to aspects like that.

Klagenfurt historically had its maximum peaks of splendour under Roman rule because it arose close to Virunum corresponding to the current cultural landscape of Zollfeld in the East Alpine Region, a former Roman settlement which became capital of the province of Noricum in the 1st century AD during the times of Emperor Claudius with also a position of relevance in the period of the powerful Austro-Hungarian Empire led by the House of Habsburg.

In a more contemporary era that Carinthian municipality consolidated its position in the highest national ranking as a relevant famed Spa-Thermal resort, hosting in addition diverse  congresses, meetings, conferences, theatre, opera and furthermore notable sporting events.

Closely related to the latter the city hosted some football matches in occasion of Germany-Austria UEFA Euro 2008, in 1969 it was the seat of the European Rowing Championships, every year it is a stage of FIBV's Beach Volley Grand Slams and  worth a mention that in 2006 it was a contender for the celebration of 2006 Winter Olympics.

Apart those considerable dates of considerable resonance also Minimundus contributed in its kind to elevate Klagenfurt as a Austrian hub with its over 15 million of visitor since its inception.

When Minimundus opened its doors in 1958 the activity was mainly limited to a local tourism but in a short time it became in its kind a city's landmark reaching soon an extreme popularity in the Kärnten Bundesland, afterwards in the 60's all around Austria and finally in the continent.

That superb miniature park was established in a magnificent environment developed on a surface verdant area of 26,000 square metres in the immediate proximity of the striking Wörthersee, a beautiful Alpine waters basin of 19,39 square kilometres, 16,5 kilometres long displaying in its fascinating setting 156 wonderful models from over 40 countries with many of the most iconic monuments of the world built  in a reduced scale 1: 25.

Those little masterpieces were created by young students of Technical schools next to voluntary workers who used for their development different kinds of materials such as marble, basalt,  lava, sandstone, rocks, wood and iron among others. 

Also that detail is highly relevant honouring people who established with their efforts without a financial revenue dedicating many hours of free time something of simply unique delighting nowadays many tourists.

Once there you can admire many stupendous replicas such as St. Peter's Square, Rome with a wonderful reproduction of its big cupola, the majestic Eiffel Tower, Paris, Tower of London, the scenic Kremlin, Moskow, a refined copy of St. Sthepen's Cathedral, Vienna, outstanding representations of Pisa tower, St. Mark's Square, Venice ,Parthenon, Athens, St. Matthias Church, Budapest, Miramare Castle, Trieste and Atomium, Brussels.

Next to those little wonders you will be delighted in addition by the stunning St. Sophia's Cathedral of Kiev with its golden Orthodox-Byzantine domes, a magnificent replica of Neuschwanstein Schloss, Bavaria, symbol of Disney, one of the most scenic spots of that stupendous theme park.

Notable are also the representations of Casa Milà also known as "La Pedrera" and the Sagrada Familia mini reproductions of the superb modernist works by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona, superb are in addition the Parisian  Arc de triomphe de l' Étoile and Einsteinturm, Potsdam

Greatly represented are other continents with marvellous works depicting the imposing White House, Washington, the iconic Statue of Liberty, New York, Independence Hall, Philadelphia but also Toronto CN Tower reproduced in a building 23,0 metres high next to other great models as the  Cathedral of Brasilia or Sydney Opera House. 

Also the Oriental and exotic world has many emblematic monuments established in Minimundus such as Süleymaniye Mosque, Istanbul absolutely perfect, equally attractive are Abu Simbel, Egypt just like Kotel Western Wall, Israel.

Simply stunning is the model depicting Taj Mahal, India next to the imposing Great Wall of China or other wonderful replicas of emblems of the Far East such as Osaka Castle,Japan and Banda Aceh Mosque, Indonesia among others.

All the continents are present sharing all together those 26,000 square metres in a unique space, also that was the mission of Minimundus which apart the fine, aesthetic image of superb, little replicas focused to generate tourist flows towards Klagenfurt had the aim to launch in its kind a message of unity in the globe.

All those miniature masterpieces representing different cultures in a varied geographic location originally arose with the most diverse architectural philosophy and styles are linked in a single area all protagonists without borders or frontiers.

All them are equally outstanding and so close each other to please the view of the visitors showing them the treasures of the planet, patrimony of the entire humanity and of all people.

Linked to that are also the models of the Space Shuttle with its launch pad,the passenger ship Queen Mary having a length of 12,40 metres several models of trains of Europe, rivers, lakes, seas, oceans developed all around those mini  monuments in the world in miniature.

All that was established without barriers or gates thanks to that superb, Carinthian Charity Institution called Rettet  Das Kind pleasing a multitude of visitors helping with the revenue of the sell of the entrance tickets many unlucky children.

That lovely site is wonderful to take pictures next to favourite or beloved monuments with friends,family, kids keeping them as lovely souvenirs or pleasant memories of that very nice park.

All the models are supplied with a description in German, English, Italian and Slovenian languages, available are facilities for people with disabilities, dogs allowed and guided tours.

That site is including very inspiring in its kind because someone looking at those wonders of our world can have an idea to plan a real, future trip visiting one or more of those places depicted in that park.

The indoor exhibition is an additional space consisting in interactive and imaginative stations taking you with fun in a journey to the discovery of the world.

The theme park also provides two 400 seat restaurants, one bar, it also organises entertainments as the show "Music in the World" celebrated every Wednesday in July and August with Jazz, Swing and Viennese songs starting at 8.30 pm.

In 2005 another Minimundus opened one of its branches in Germany in  Meckenbeuren, a splendid town very close to Ravensburg and Lake Constance.

Located in Villacher Strasse 241, if you are driving, that attraction is easily reachable by A2 Motorway taking the exit Klagenfurt West.  

Once there you have to continue until a further bifurcation with another exit indicating Klagenfurt See-Europa Park-Minimundus and in a very short time you will be at approximately 300,0 metres of the entrance with also the facility of a big parking.(I added some links below to have more information if you are interested) 

Klagenfurt has its International Airport, Flughafen Karnten, situated at just 10 minutes from that site. 

In the case spending a pleasant stay in the city;s centre from there you can take the buses numbers 10 and 20 managed by the company Stadwerke Klagenfurt Gruppe and they stop very close to the main gate of that fantastic theme park.
 
If you are planning to visit Austria with destination  the beautiful Carinthia, do not have hesitations to enjoy a stop in Klagenfurt, a city packed by many beautiful things and do not forget Minimundus is a unique tourist experience enjoying the world in miniature, something you will certainly remember with pleasure forever.
