Petra, Jordan | Introduced New Hiking Trails Showcasing Cultural Preservation, Bedouin Heritage and Sustainable Tourism

PDTRA, the Petra Development and Tourism Authority of the Petra Region in Jordan has introduced new hiking trails, showcasing cultural preservation, Bedouin heritage and sustainable tourism, and also aimed to promote ecotourism and offering economic opportunities for the local community.

This expansion of the trail network reflects Petra Authority commitment to integrate into to tourism initiatives local communities, a project which ensures that economic benefits are shared while offering visitors an enriching authentic experience in Petra, also called the  the “ Rose City” because of the colour of the sandstone from which is carved, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its surroundings.

The Chief Commissioner of the PDTRA, Fares Braizat informed that the initiative includes three trails within the Petra Archaeological Park, while another 24 extend beyond its boundaries and he told the Jordan Times that most of the rehabilitated trails and presented to visitors will be posted on the “Visit Petra “ website.

These hikes are suitable for children from 10 years old and families will be able to enjoy the unique scenery and geological formations and they will also be able to learn about Jordan’s topography and archaeology that extends beyond Petra.

Visitors will not only visit Petra’s breathtaking geological formations but also engage with Bedouin life, traditions, and hospitality. The iniatitive ensures that tourism directly benefits local communitis, aligning with broader sustainable tourism goals.

Chief Commissioner said that this project one of the major contributions is the representation of Bedouin culture. Bedouin heritage of Petra and Wadi Rum is recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2008, and the desire is to showcase it to the world as an immersive hospitality experience.

The so called Khurmah Trail inaugurated hike is part of an extensive network of 27 hiking trails recentrly developed, offering a journey through diverse landscapes and historical sites.

The trail spanning 14.0 kilometres starts form Al Rajef, a village situated in the Ma’ an Governorate, about 25 kilometres southwest of  the Petra Visitor Centre and Daghlah, to Masoudah, a location where visitors can find Bedouin tents and enjoy traditional hospitality.

The itinerary is developed across a stunning valley taking hikers through diverse landscapes and historical sites, including Wadi Khurmah itself, a wadi known for its striking rock formation and Edomite - period artifacts, adding to the overall historical and natural significance of the trail.

This captivating adventure alls  leads to Beit Al Sa\`idyyin, a cultural and hospitality hub opened by Chief Commissioner of the PDTRA, and aims to showcase Bedouin heritage and supporting the local economy through immersive hiking experience

Hikers head west through the Samaan area area before reaching the trailhead at Arqoub - Al Ghanimat and along the way they can admire features renmants of Nabatean water system, archaeological ruins, and spectacular natural rock formation and the route concludes in Masoudah, where visitors can rest in a Bedouin tent and enjoy traditional Jordanian hospitality.

The trail is managed by the Jabal Masoudah Cooperative Association, a local organization dedicated to preserving Bedouin traditions and promoting sustainable tourism and fostering economic growth.

Al – Munqata’a - An archaeological site located near Tafileh, known for being a late Neolithis settlement, considered the easternmost such settlement discovered to date. Argentina formalized an agreement with Chile for the “Ruta del Fuego” a route project consisting in 1.800 kilometre binational circuit with the aim to boosts tourism in the region.

This initiative essentially aims to highlight the natural beauty and attractions of the emblematic Tierra del Fuego, with the purpose to elevate this land shared by the two South American countries as a global destination.

The project was born from the joint work between the Chamber of Commerce, with the of the provincial government, INFUETUR, the Fuegian Institute of Tourim and the  the Consul of Chile in Rio Grande, city in Argentina on the north cost of the eastern part of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

The Consul of Chile in Rio Grande, Roberto Ruiz Piracés, stressed that with this formalization begins a new stage to position the Ruta del Fuego as an international destination, underlining the coordinated work between both governments, INFUETUR and the Chamber of Commerce.

The Director of Tourism North and Center of INFUETUR, Stella Maris Alazard, stressed that the Ruta del Fuego has already been presented at FIT, the International Tourism Fair which took place in Buenos Aires, which gave it visibility as a new thematic route within Tierra del Fuego.

Changes were reported in the terminals of the airport at Havana as informed the President of Cacsa, the Cuban Aviation Corporation S.A., Joel Beltrán Archer Santos who highlighted the strategic importance of the development of airport infrastructure to enhance tourism, trade and international connectivity of the Caribbean country.

The President of Cacsa added that tourism continues to be the main engine of growth for Cuba aviation, so expanding the capacitiy of the José Martí Internartional Airport is a key step to boost the economic recovery of the sector, as well as its international projection and for this the changes in several of the terminals of the Havana airport will be vital.

Currently, Cuba has 10 international airports, among which the José Martí International Airport in Havana plays a central role and this plan of renovation focuses on changes in some of its terminals aims to improve its performances. 

Officials said modernization of its runways, platforms and terminals is a priority of the program, with emphasis on renovations and expansions in the following operations  : 

Terminal 2 - Optimization of the terminal handling various operations ensuring greater coverage for passengers and airlines.
Terminal 3 - Expansion of the surface area of the terminal increasing capacity by 30%.
Terminal 5  - Development of a fixed - base operator in the terminal. 

The President of Cacsa said that the objective is to turn Cuba into a more competitive air hub in the Caribbean, capable of attracting greater national and foreign investment.

The modernization of aircraft and terminals seeks to raise the standards of safety and operational efficiency, in line with the demands of contemporary air transport.

•    Tourism promotion and competitiveness -  Innovation, digitalization, training and sustainability. Training programs will be developed for entrepreneurs and local communities with the aim of improving the tourism offer and guaranteeing quality experiences for visitors.
•    National Promotion - Fairs, national events and the second season of “Ecuador a la Carta”, a documentary series that highlights the country’s gastronomic diversity. In addition, the presence of the Country Brand will reinforced in different strategic spaces.
•    Quality, investments and Connectivity - Improvement of tourism quality and strengthening of connectivity. New air routes will be implemented and tourism infrastructure will be improved in key destinations.
•    Tourism Development - Promotion od smart destinations, signage and technical assistances. Projects will be carried out to improve tourism planning in different provinces of the country.

The Minister of Tourism emphasized that tourism is advancing and Ecuador is progressing and he reaffirmed the National Government’s vision of promoting the tourism industry as an engine of development.
