Guatemala | Domestic Tourism, a Key Pillar for the Country's Economy

Guatemala's domestic tourism is experiencing a notable growth and it continues to consolidate itself as a key pillar for the country's economy with a projected increase this year, supported by factors like several government initiatives, infrastructure improvements, and a special focus on sustainable tourism.

The Central American country to showcase all its attractiveness is very active in promoting lesser - known routes, such as destinations in the Guatemalan Caribbean region also known as  El Atlántico, a steamy tropical area in eastern Guatemala along the Bay of Amatique and the Gulf of Honduras, characterized by lush landscapes, a coastline of palm trees, blue - green waters and coral reefs, Afro - Caribbean Culture, with a special mention to the Garifuna settlement of Livingston, accessible by riverboat or ocean.

Another destination promoted is the area of the Highlands of Quetzalotenango also known as “Los Altos”, a mountainous region in Western Guatemala, featuring diverse landscapes, including volcanoes, valleys, and Mayan villages with Xela as major cultural and transportation hub.

These destinations are part of the diversification plan of tourist offer of Guatemala that in addition is also focusing on digitizing tourism services to facilitate reservations and enhance the visitors experience from the planning stage in an innovative way.

According to data provided by INGUAT, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourism, 27.2 million trips are expected to be made within Guatemala in 2025, an increase of 6% compared to 2024, when 25.7 million trips were recorded.

This projected growth will drive an economic contribution of Q58.8 billion, reflecting the importance of tourism for the development of various local industries.

Holy week is one of the seasons of greatest tourist mobility in Guatemala with a very active domestic tourism, generating a significant impact on sectors such as accommodation, gastronomy, transportations and commerce.

In order to facilitate the travellers' experience and strengthen the ecoonomy of tourist destinations, credit cards are already accepted in most places.

INGUAT's Department of Research and Market Analysis revealed that domestic tourism has shown sustained growth in recent years, in 2024 this activity generated Q56.6 billion in revenues, with an upward trend that will continue in 2025.

As additional note according to data recorded by INGUAT statistics bulletin, inbound tourism, corresponding to international visitors, also plays a key role in the national economy. More than 3 million international visitors were registered in 2024, leaving revenues of $1.324 million. 

By 2025, a 12% increase in international visitors is projected, which will generate estimated revenue of $2.200 million.
