Doushan, China | Archaeologists Discovered a Prehistoric Stone Spindle Workshop Dated to about 6.000 Years Ago

A team of Chinese archaeologists made a significant discovery: a prehistoric spindle workshop dated to about 6.000 years ago was found in the site of Doushan in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province, a settlement located between the Yangze River and Taihu Lake, in an area that covers about 250.000 square metres and mainly preserves vestiges of the Majabang and Sorgze cultures,  both from the Neolithic period.

According to information released from the Global Times, a daily tabloid based in Beijing, the find offers new evidences of large - scale production in antiquity.

Among the objects found, the large number of unfinished piece of stone spindles, around 3000 units, caught the attention of specialists.

According to the archaeologists, this number indicates the existence of a production workshop, as it would exceed the daily needs of the community and in addition, analyses show that most of the raw material was extracted locally and processed in the same place.

Experts stated that the stone spindles were not only used as tools by the inhabitants, but also for trade, as products of exchange with other tribes.

Therefore, the find not only highlights the technical skill of the population of the Maijabang culture, recognized as one of the earliest Neolithic cultures in the lower reaches of the Yangtze, providing critical evidence for the origin of Chinese civilization, but also suggest an early highly organized industrial operation and  the existence of primitive trade 6.000 years ago.
