San Juan, Argentina | Inaugurated the New San Juan Domingo Faustino Sarmiento International Airport Terminal

A historic day was lived on 10th December 2025 in San Juan, a valley city east of the Andes Mountains in west - central Argentina with the inauguration of the new passenger air terminal of the San Juan International Airport "Domingo Faustino Sarmiento" ( UAQ) serving the city and named after Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, the seventh President of Argentina, located in Las Chacritas in the eastern centre of the Túlum Valley oasis within the 9 de Julio Department, 12 kilometres east of the city of San Juan.

The air terminal had been under construction since 2018 with millionaire investment to develop greater capacity to accommodate flights and the possibility of enabling international travel.

The works began seven years ago under the command of Grupo Petersen, a major economic conglomerate that engages in engineering and construction, energy, banking, agribusiness and urban services businesses across Argentina, registering the first brake the following year due to difficulties with the terrain.

The inauguration of the first part of the remodelling took place in 2023, when the work was already under the construction of the Mendoza company, Procon, after the termination of the contract with Grupo Petersen.

The works continued, practically leaving the airport in new condition, with the incorporation of two sleeves that allow four aicraft to operate simultaneously, something never seen before in the province of San Juan.

In addition, works were carried out on the runway and in the parking lot, the installation of a new RX and Immigration control, the expansion of the international boarding area, and the placement of new baggage belts, among other improvements.

The project to complete the terminal, which involved an investment of over $55 million, was managed by Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 and the Argentine government. The new terminal replaces the previous structure and includes significant enhancements:

·       Expanded Infrastructure: The terminal has an expanded surface, a new international boarding area and the capacity to operate four flights simultaneously.

·       Modern Amenities: Key additions include two boarding brisges (jet sleeves) , 12 check - in counters, modern baggage claim belts, new commercial and gastronomic offerings, and renovated parking areas.

·       Operational Improvements: The runway, control tower, and X - ray and migration controls were all part of the upgrade, preparing the airport for increased domestic and international traffic, which has been growing in the region.

·       Seismic Adaptation: The design of the new terminal incorporated key structural adaptations to withstand seismic activity, as San Juan is a high-risk earthquake zone.

This project is part of a larger national plan to upgrade airports across Argentina and aims to boost regional and international connectivity, particularly for the growinng mining and tourism industries.

The official inauguration ceremony took place on the top floor, in the international boarding area, a completely new zone that expect to receive thousands of travellers from different parts of the world. The event was attended by the CEO of Aeropuertos Argentina, Daniel Ketchibachian, who was together with the governor of San Juan's province Marcelo Orrego and other officials.

CEO of Aeropuertos Argentina, Daniel Ketchibachian assured the media present before the official ceremony of the importance of having created an airport of international quality, stating that this development is a work of $55 million, and it is true that it took longer than Aeropuertos Argentina would have liked, but when you see the end it is worth the effort and sacrifice, and today there is an airport that is a total pride.

In addition, the CEO highlighted the importance of increasing capacity, enabling the possibility of boarding four flights simultaneously, the terminal is ready to receive domestic flights, services also tripled with an expansion of gastronomic and tourist facilities.

The Governor of San Juan Province Marcelo Orrego highlighted the importance of having a passenger terminal that is international in nature to expand San Juan's connectivity to the world, not only thinking about tourism but also about all the chances that will enable as of today. The city is going to have the opportunity to receive many people who want to enjoy the Province, and this allows San Juan to be prepared for new opportunities.

Thessaloniki, Greece | Preparing the Debut of a New Waterfront Deck to Enhance the Overall Visitor Experience

Thessaloniki, a vibrant port city located on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea in northern Greece, a major economic, industrial and commercial  hub of the Hellenic Republic, highlighted by a rich cultural and historical heritage with evidence of several Byzantine, Roman and Ottoman history remains, especially around the upper town Ano Poli, and renowned destination for its festivals, events and cultural proposals is preparing the debut of a new waterfront deck to enhance the overall visitor experiences.

This development is one of Thessaloniki’s most significant urban upgrades in the contermporary era, consisting in a new wooden seafront deck along its iconic promenade, designed to significantly improve pedestrian access, safety, transforming the seafront into a modern hub for urban tourism and relaxation.

The new waterfront deck is set to connect the port to the emblematic White Tower,  a six floors building 34 metres high with a perimeter of 70 metres completed in the 15th century in Byzantine and Early Ottoman architectural style, one of the main monuments of the city overlooking the city's harbour, located in a public park and housing a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Thessaloniki.

The project, after receiving positive opinions from 12 agencies, is now entering its final approval phase, is expected to significantly enhance both the daily life of residents and the visitor experience along the city’s most photographed stretch.

With the Ministry of Environment giving green light the tender is scheduled for the first four months of 2026, marking a key step toward implementing one of Thessaloniki’s most anticipated coastal intervention. The project also aims to integrate nature with urban life, offering a more pleasant and safe environment for people to enjoy the city’s famous waterfront offering stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the spectacular local coastline.

Stretching 1.100 metre long and 12 metres wide, the new deck will be developed as an extension of the existing quay, giving visitors the sensation of walking atop the sea. Architects drew inspiration from the feeling of a moored vessel, creating a structure that maintains the area’s gentle, natural character while avoiding past objections linked to hand reclamation.

The project also introduces a redesigned cycling route, replacing the current bike lane on Nikis Avenue, and includes a separate tactile path for visually impaired pedestrians, improving safety and accessibility along the promenade.

Upon competion, the deck is expected to become one of Greece’s most attractive waterfront walks, offering uninterrumpted views of the Thermaic Gulf and providing a new signature landmark for Thessaloniki.

City officials believe the intervention will reinforce the destination’s identity as an open, modern, visitor - friendly urban hub, and further elevate its appeal among both Greek and international travellers.

Dubai Crown Prince and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has approved and announced the implementation of a new digital, contactless check - in system for hotel guests in Dubai, using their biometric data in the UAE’s city and emirate as reported by Emirates News Agency (WAM).

This initiative is part of the implementation of digital technologies in Dubai’s tourism sector. Previously, smart biometric corridors were introduced at the city’s airport, allowing passengers to pass passport control in a matter of seconds.

The innovative system, which is already in place, will allow guests the entire check - in procedure on their smartphone before arriving at the hotel, uploading their ID and biometrics enabling seamless check – in on future stays, with information stored securely until the ID expires. This will make check - in at the hotel faster than usual.

It is specified that almost a quarter of annual guests arrive in Dubai repeatedly. These guests will not be asked to go through the check - in process every time: on their second arrival, they will only have to pass a quick facial recognition procedure.

New digital, contactless check – in system key features:

·    Pre - Arrival Registration: Guests use a digital link (via hotel apps/websites to upload ID and biometric info remotely.

·     Biometric Verification: A one time ID/biometric upload allows for future check – ins with a quick facial scan.

·    Citywide Framework: A unified system adopted by licensed hotels and holiday homes, moving beyond property – specific tools.

·     Data Validity: Securely hold data remains valid until the ID expires, streamlining repeat visits.

·     Seamless Experience: Eliminates queues, offering a faster, more convenient arrival from travel to relaxation.

How It Works:

·     Receive Link: Guests get a digital link before their stay.

·      Upload Details: They securely upload ID (passport/emirates ID) and perform a biometric scan like a selfie.

·       Arrival: Upon arrival, they bypass the front desk and use of facial recognition for authentication.

This initiave, driven by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) aligns with Dubai’s vision for a smart, seamless urban environment, boosting operational efficiency and enhancing the visitor experience.

The Director General of the Dubai Ministry of Economy and Tourism, Helal Said Almarri said that the implementation of the contactless check - in system across the city is a turning point for Dubai’s hospitality industry and a clear example of progess in meeting the objectives of the D33 programme.

The D33 development was adopted in 2023 and has a 10 - year term. It is aimed at accelerating growth and doubling Dubai’s economy, as well as consolidating the city’s position among the world’s top three economically developed metropolises by 2033.
