Argentina | Agreement with Chile for the Ruta del Fuego Project, a 1.800 Kilometre Binational Circuit to Boost Tourism in the Region

Argentina formalized an agreement with Chile for the “Ruta del Fuego” a route project consisting in 1.800 kilometre binational circuit with the aim to boosts tourism in the region.

This initiative essentially aims to highlight the natural beauty and attractions of the emblematic Tierra del Fuego, with the purpose to elevate this land shared by the two South American countries as a global destination.

The project was born from the joint work between the Chamber of Commerce, with the of the provincial government, INFUETUR, the Fuegian Institute of Tourim and the  the Consul of Chile in Rio Grande, city in Argentina on the north cost of the eastern part of the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

This stunning land is located at the southern tip of South America, often referred to as the “End of the World" is highlighted by the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, agroup of islands is located at the southern extremity of the South American mainland between the Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel consisting of the main island, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego along with numerous smaller islands and islets including Cape Horn and Diego Ramirez Islands.

Tierra del Fuego is a territory offers unique wilderness, striking coastlines, wildlife encounters and a glimpse into human exploration at the southernmost tip of South America, with beautiful attractions.

Tierra del Fuego National Park is one of the jewels of this Latin American territory, a natural paradise in the ecoregion of Patagonic Forest and Altos Andes, a protected area of over 63.000 hectares of vibrant, rugged landscapes, pristine lakes, majestic glaciers, beautiful beaches, a captivating tundra, a rich flora and fauna, an incredible costline and towering, jagged mountains.

A Further highlight is the Beagle Channel, a suggestive strait of the archipelago, well known for its biodiversity, dramatic landscapes and abundant wildlife, with a notable presence of sea lions, cormorants and depending on the season, penguins, especially on the islet Isla Martillo. 


Ushuaia is another great attraction, is  the capital of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province and the southernmost trip of South America, nicknamed the “End of the World”.

This suggestive town perched on a steep hill overlooking the ocean surrounded by the Beagle Channel and the Martial Mountains range offers spectacular landscapes, unforgettable sunsets and it is the main  gateway to Antarctica cruises and great tours to nearby Penguin Island, famous for its penguin colonies.

The entire territory is a paradise for several outdoor activities and adventures such as hiking, kayaking, trekking, wildlife viewing, fishing, skiing and much more.

The Undersecretary of Automotive Transport of Argentina, Mariano Ignacio Plencovic, announced the official implementation of the Ruta del Fuego Binational Circuit, a project that seeks to strengthen tourism and integration between Argentina and Chile and also projected to create a multi destination proposal allowing travellers to visit  two countries in a trip.

With this agreement the “Ruta del Fuego” is recognized as a closed circuit, which will facilitate admimnistrative, migratory and customs procedures, allowing its consolidation as an emerging tourist detination.

The Consul of Chile in Rio Grande, Roberto Ruiz Piracés, stressed that with this formalization begins a new stage to position the Ruta del Fuego as an international destination, underlining the coordinated work between both governments, INFUETUR and the Chamber of Commerce.

The Director of Tourism North and Center of INFUETUR, Stella Maris Alazard, stressed that the Ruta del Fuego has already been presented at FIT, the International Tourism Fair which took place in Buenos Aires, which gave it visibility as a new thematic route within Tierra del Fuego.  

This the starting point for an integrated tourism development which will strengthen the territory as a complimentary and attractive destination in the international landscape. 

This relevant agreement between Argentina and Chile also seeks to generate opportunities for less developed regions, revaluing unique landscapes and promoting sustainable tourism.

In the next steps the authorities of both countries will work on infrastructure and services to strengthen the tourist offer and consolidate the Ruta del Fuego as a first - class destination.
