Florence, capital of Italy's Tuscany region, one of the most charming and attractive cities and tourist destinations worldwide, cradle of the Renaissance and home of many masterpieces of art and architecture experienced an operation led by the municipal police who removed 187 Keyboxes in the UNESCO Area corresponding to the historic and monumental centre of the Tuscan city inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982, emcompassing the urban space within the ancient circle of the 14th century walls that includes iconic sites like the emblematic “Duomo” or Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore, Uffizi Gallery and Palazzo Pitti among others.
From Palazzo Vecchio, official seat of the Florentine Municipality with a press release was communicated that an operation led by the Municipal Police started on 25th February 2025 in the streets of Central Florence have removed 187 keyboxes, thus completing the removal of the cans prohibited by resolution of the city council on 10th February 2025 in the UNESCO area, following an act of address by the council.
At the time of the approval of the resolution there were 380 keyboxes in the UNESCO Area of the Tuscan city surveyed by the municipal police, and of these more than half were removed by the owners of the short - term tourist rental activities themselves, during the period granted by the municipal administration to comply with the new ban before on to the material removal.
The ban of keyboxes in the capital of Tuscany is for reasons of both decorum and public safety, is set out in a resolution of the city council which also establishes the ban on voice amplifiers for tourist guides, focal points of the decalogue supports a more sustainable tourism in a more livable city presented by Mayor Sara Funaro and Councilor for Tourism, Jacopo Vicini more than four months ago.
With this operation, thanks to the classification of each keybox removed now, it is possible for the municipal police to move on the phase of investigations, managing a functional process concerning the sanctions for the owners who have not independently taken steps to comply.
The Councillor for Tourism of Florence addede that there will be further removals in other city districts ,starting from the reports that are already arriving. Some would already be removed in Via Ponte alle Mosse, a street located in the western suburbs of the capital of Tuscany, in the vicinity of the squares of Porta al Prato and Piazza Puccini, and in other Florentine neighborhoods were several reports have already arrived.
