The history of La Antilla is also very interesting started a long time ago according to archaeological excavations were found in the area artifacts dating back the Neolithic and Bronze eras in a land which was visited by Phoenicians in the 8th century BC replaced by the Tartessians who largely inherited the active trades of that population especially by sea.

Occupied since the 5th century by Carthage the  the first considerable settlement was during the times of the Roman Empire starting in the 2nd Century BC with the victorious expedition led by General Publius Cornelius Scipius in 206 BC defeating that North African power in an event corresponding to the Second Punic War.

During those times were developed important networks of communication, an active commerce with a solid political life but the fall of Rome due to several Vandals raids who ravaged towns and villages become a pretty unsafe place to settle before the advent of the Visigoths as rulers since the 5th century with King Euric son of Theodoric I.

In 713 that territory was conquered by Abd al-Aziz ibn Musa governor of Ifriqya who led the operations of the troops commanded by a Berber general called Tariq ibn Ziyad determining the advent of the Umayyad Dynasty first of governors a long Moorish domination in the old Hispania endured until 1492 with the fall of Granada, last stronghold of the Arabs in the Al-Andalus the Muslim Iberia.

One of the most important periods in medieval times before the Spanish Reconquista, the reconquest by the Catholic Kings in the late 15th century was certainly that secular Moorish rule which after almost eight centuries of rule  left relevant marks in terms of agriculture and fishing activities which both became for a long time the main local resources for La Antilla.

Navigation and sailors also played an important role later with the famous expeditions related to the Americas discoveries which had along that coast the emblematic nearest port of Palos de la Frontera an absolute protagonist as point of departure of Christopher Columbus who landed on the Island San Salvador on 12th October 1492 thinking to be in Asia but discovering another Continent highlighted by a a marvellous exotic Paradise.

All that influenced the local culture with local navigators who reached different trips to those territories and the name La Antilla is historically closely related to that as well as its beaches.

After that important event  with including the notable discovery of new places as several Caribbean islands, the magnificent Antilles, some Iberian sailors returning to the motherland from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico started to compare those shimmering golden beaches to those of Andalusia especially with the Costa de la Luz including that of the present resort.

The quality of sands, Atlantic waters and in some cases with a sort of nostalgia deriving from a sentiment linked to indelible memories related to those striking lands of the West Indies generated that word "Antille" which translated in Spanish is Antilla was often mentioned by those men, persistent in many phrases, comments chats and in the 16th century that coastal borough of Lepe officially took that denomination.

After centuries lived in the Kingdom of Spain with the parenthesis of the Dictatorship after the notorious Guerra Civil war in the 30's followed by the re-establishment of the Monarchy in the 70's after the death of General Francisco Franco, the present resort grew as a consolidated, active fishing harbour becoming a notable centre well known for its prawns and sea bass caught.

A new industry as the Tourism replaced in the first position of the local ranking the previous thanks to the presence in the local boundaries of several kilometres of marvellous golden beaches generating an extreme interest by new entrepreneurs and operators along who saw in that not very developed due to a lack of Hotels and accommodations a golden mine.

All started with its famous twin Islantilla, two seaside resorts which since not a long time ago were mainly frequented by locals or visitors coming from the cities of Huelva, Seville and from the region of Extremadura who due to the proximity spent  there holidays mainly in camping or in houses, flats and apartments for rent in the 60's and 70's with a signal of notable increasing a decade later.

A very intense promotion which reached high peaks of interest also on International scale came in the 90's when on the soil of that sunny, Spanish coastline started the constructions of new comfortable complexes, attractive accommodations fully equipped linked to new established Hotel Chains.

Attractive proposals thanks to the actions of Tour Operators, marketing operations linked to a commercialisation focused to produce a fruitful, incoming business along that magic coast was managed in collaboration with the Andalusian Tourism Board which strongly participated to special campaigns to launch in the market something of extremely captivating.

The constant presence in International Fairs, Tourism events promoting those emergent resorts of the Costa de la Luz to specialised foreign outgoing Tour Operators offering a very tempting product highly attracted the attention especially of the Scandinavian countries and much more that of  The Netherlands.

A considerable positive answer in terms of requests of beds with several overnights during many months was a first relevant stage conquering the Dutch market, in a place as Andalusia considered very trendy also for the advent of Golf as sport to practise at that latitude all year.

Those options were highly valued for the quality of a network of services with facilities  which perfectly responded to a determined niche of tourism.

Since then many Tour Operators of that country also managed a large number of allotments and the boom of the low costs next to special charter flights landing in convenient airports closed several full booking operations for individuals but also groups.

A bit later those successful results reached a considerable popularity all around the world attracting other tourists from other countries in a place which despite the establishment of a good number of Hotels never had a massive construction saving the image of those Andalusian resorts thanks to a clever, attentive plan of preservation of the territory with its natural patrimony.

The aim to promote places as La Antilla was mainly aimed to offer something of alternative than the busy and substantially, different, nearest Costa del Sol located geographically at the same latitude but pretty different.

Two diverse  product in terms of taste, specific choice of holidays by a tourist for many aspects, features highly visible at first sight.

The Costa de La Luz is very different than that famed of Malaga, the coastline has another kind of conformation, the temperature of the sea water is  not the same, one is typically Oceanic the other Mediterranean, the first is more windy including the tonality, consistence of the sand and the development of beaches have not many things in common.

Due to that born a market segmentation in a land which was not conceived and thought to develop there a sort of prolongation of the Costa del Sol already with rooted qualities, famous for a vibrant nightlife, with big Hotels, busy venues, animated clubs elevated in Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Benalmadena among others.

La Antilla just like Islantilla, Isla Cristina, Isla Canela and all the destinations in the immediate proximity were promoted as places boasting an intact, pristine aspect of their coastal landscapes, a relaxing atmosphere,  perfect destination for water sports lovers with the chance to practise windsurfing, kite surfing, saliling next to  that Paradise of golden beaches which also bewitched many people for their considerable longitude.

All those aspects were strongly highlighted in Educational at the end of the 90's focused to transmit other special, attractive features as the environment highlighted by a natural, secular presence of sandy dunes very similar to the scenery of the nearest Eastern Algarve with a special kind of vegetation in the immediate proximity, also those details despite they could appear as secondary generated a great impact transformed in a superb, successful feedback later.

In more recent times, concretely in 2006 was established a complex called La Cigueña, the stork, mainly hosting Dutch tourists and in the following year there was a further expansion of that neighbourhood of Lepe.

The centre is mainly concentrated around the central avenue Avenida La Antilla connected to two o two long arteries such as Avenida Isla Cristina at west leading to Islantilla and on its eastern side you will find Avenida El Terron while Avenida de Castilla, a boulevard immediately south consisting in the liveliest, local hub on which you can find a good number of shops, bars and restaurants.

The local maritime promenade immediately invites people to have long, pleasant walks bordering a beautiful coastal stretch on a scenic walkway flanked by palms Mediterranean plants, undoubtedly a great introduction of the resort.

From there you can start the visit from the the local beach called Playa de La Antilla is to admire the wonderful local coastal conformation with that approximately 3,2 kilometres long marvel averagely 90,0 metres wide and that notable presence is immediately a special highlight, a winning key to charm a visitor at first sight falling in love not just for that impressive length but also for the colours and all what there is around too.

That large sandy stretch is a perfect place to enjoy spaces in total tranquillity during many months a year and that is another wonderful aspect which delights the visitor because there are not problem to find a free section for sunbaths, there is always a corner to lie and your towel will not be at less than half metre of someone else as frequently happens in other seaside resorts.

Well maintained, boasting excellent cleanliness, vigilance services. easily accessible by the promenade without natural barriers, it was awarded as a Q Playa, a distinctive award for beaches boasting a high quality in a ranking organised after a severe check in before the delivery of that prestigious title.

That sort of award comes after a very attentive analysis with a final result which sums many points, nothing easy because there are coefficient in the score which includes status of the sand, waters, accessibility, quality of the services, further inspections just some months later to control if all could be confirmed.

In addition it also gained the Ecoplaya prize which consists in a distinctive flag which waves with pride on its surface for merits linked to the global healthy of the setting, the preservation of the natural environment,a kind of official certificate which elevates determined beaches at the top after constant examinations, in brief, a sort of University degree with the maximum votes.

Naturally summer season is a period of  high occupation thanks to all those positive features,  worth a special mention the high quality of the Atlantic water which is also was one of the points related to those mentioned achievements.

Not far you can admire the iconic Torre del Catalan, the Catalan Tower located half way between the local beach and Puerto El Terrón.

That construction was originally one of the ten defencive towers established during the Reign of King Felipe II erected between the 16th and 17th century as check point, integrated in the Royal defencive systems due to several attacks the Southern Spanish coasts suffered in that period by Berber pirates.

The coast of Huelva was considered pretty vulnerable for that was formed that almost impenetrable network of strong structures studied as bastion but developed to provide an easy access to the nearest interior in the case of massive landings of the enemy.

In the following century the Iberian Kingdom started to reinforce those fortified constructions also to defend its borders by possible landings of notorious powers as England and France, especially the latter which was looking for an expansion of their domains in the Mediterranean after the loss of diverse colonies in the American continent.

Those kinds of structures were called Torres Almenara built as lookouts, optical towers which were previously used by the Moors from which derives that Hispanic name took by the Arabic compositions of two words such as Al Ma and nar  meaning respectively tower and fire.

The soldiers used  that ancient system which was also previously adopted by the Maritime Republics of Pisa and Amalfi during the assaults along the Mediterranean coasts by the Saracens in medieval times.

The guards from the top crackled fires creating smoke signals of white colour to alert the inhabitants and the neighbouring areas there was an approaching of attack by sea, in that way the military headquarter seeing those signals was ready to organise the artillery batteries moving the civilians they moved towards the interior in safer places.

The tower is 9,8 metres high developed on a wide plan with approximately 2,0 metres of wall thickness with an entrance corresponding to a door built 5,0 metres above the soil with a camera established in a circular plant with 4,60 metres of diameter and a semi spherical vault, in addition on the ground was placed  the mouth of a well.

That construction is pretty famous for another historic event corresponding to a change of position due to the terrible earthquake dated 1755 which had as its epicentre the Portuguese Capital Lisbon.(I wrote a post about that stunning city if you are interested)

During that tragic event most of Portugal but also a large part of Western Spain suffered severe damages, a natural, sad disaster which devastated the 80% of the houses of Lepe and that construction was originally located next to the sea moving at over 1,0 kilometres from its former position.

In about minutes driving you can reach from there Puerto de El Terrón, an area pretty famous since a long time ago  because it corresponds to the former port in which were planned the trips to South America by Juan Diaz de Solis.
