Andalusia – Spain | Leader in Measuring and Monitoring Tourism Sustainabilty

 


Andalusia, autonomous community composed of eight provinces located in the south of Spain highlighted by its splendid and sunny Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines, dramatic landscapes in its interior, with a very rich cultural and historical heritage with unique cities of art, stands as a leader in measuring and monitoring tourism sustainability by promoting with three other regions an European project that will strengthen this sector.

This initiative funded by the European Commission and implemented by the OECD, the Organization for Economic and Co - operation and development was led by Andalusia in cooperation with the communities of Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Navarre with the support of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, a project that has been framed in the Spanish Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The Tourism and Andalusian Exterior Advisor Arturo Bernal highlighted Andalusia's position of international leadership in operations concerning the measurement and monitoring of the sustainability of tourism, a global strategy endorsed by the promotion of the European Community project for the design of a tool that allows to have qualitative data for the development of a more sustainable and also resilient tourism model.

On the day of presentation of the reports prepared through the pilot project in four communities in Spain, the Tourism and Andalusian Exterior Advisor stated that the indicators analyzed, which are destined to be consolidated as international standards, will contribute to the process in a fundamental sector to ensure the maintenance of tourism activity and consequently the generation of stable benefits for the community.

In a statement was communicated that he Andalusian community is deeply honored to have led this remarkable project of pioneering regions in tourism developed with a system consisting of 21 key indicators that allows to measure and monitor the sustainability of the sector that with the results obtained through common metrics improve the composition of tourism impacts and establish a fundamental system to identify the fundamental data that will guide policies facilitating decision-making strategic.

The indicators mentioned are grouped into four dimensions such as governance which focuses on sustainable management, the economic indicator which aims on aspects such as benefits for the local economy and the reduction of seasonality, the socio-cultural indicator which includes community sentiment and inclusion in the world of work and the environmental indicator which is based on the measurement of impact in the areas of natural resources and climate change.

The Tourism and Andalusian Exterior Advisor then underlined that this project undoubtedly strengthens the ability to decide the direction of tourism in Andalusia with the awareness of having a solid database, of protecting natural and cultural resources of the territory and of advancing in a sector that is a positive force for the region that extends the benefits to residents but also to visitors and the environment itself.

The Tourism Advisor then informed that the conference will be held in Marbella, renowned destination in the province of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, a location that continues to play a role of primary importance in shaping the future of tourism at the headquarters of Andalusia Lab which promotes Andalusian tourism industry using a technological approach making Andalusia increasingly competitive internationally which symbolizes with its presence the commitment to innovation with ambitious plans.

In the opening session of the opening day, the Tourism and Andalusian Exterior Advisor was accompanied by the Director of the Tourism Cooperation and Competitiveness Division of the Secretary of State for Tourism Rubén López, the Director of the Sustainable Growth and Enterprise Unit of the European Commission's General Directorate of Support for Structural Reforms, Kaspar Richter, and in video conference by the Head of Tourism Policy and Analysis of the European Commission.  OECD, Jane Stacy.

This meeting provided a significant opportunity to establish debates and share experiences on the key results and lessons learned from the project, identify perspectives on how the Spanish regions intend to implement and use this system, and create an exchange of views on how to transform the data base into practical actions, focused on a more sustainable future of tourism.
