Puerto Rico | Historic Agreement with the Dominican Republic to Promote Multi - Destination Tourism

Puerto Rico, a self - governing Caribbean archipelago and island organized as an unicorporated territory of the United States under the designation of commonwealth, belonging the Greater Antilles, signed a historic agreement with Dominican Republic to promote multi – Destination Tourism and a solid collaboration that includes several aspects.

The motto "The Caribbean is Us" highlighted and marked the beginning of a partnership between the two Caribbean islands to promote multi – destination tourism, air connectivity, among other initiatives, as part of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation Tourism.

This alliance will come into effect in May 2025 with a promotional campaign that will have an investment of $1.0 million from each country.

Puerto Rico Governor Jennifer González Colón, explained that this memorandum aims to strengthen cooperation in the tourism sector between the two countries through the exchange of information, organization of events and the promotion of investments, which addresses accommodations, festivals, packages among other offers and initiatives.

The possibility of this historic agreement was in talks for about 15 years and the Puerto Rican Governor added that it is the first time the two countries they are going to promote themselves together as destinations in the Caribbean region.

The Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic, David Collado, said that Dominican tourism is also greatly strengthened from Puerto Rico, since 255.000 Puerto Rican tourists went to the Dominican Republic in 2024 and this year the estimation is to receive about 300.000 visitors from Puerto Rico.

The Dominican Minister during a press conference which included the Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Willianette Robles emphasized on some points highlighting that two islands that are 40 - minutes flight away, why are they so far apart ?

The Minister made some examples, as if a tourist visits Europe he can visit Madrid, Paris, and several cities and countries and why can't a European tourist come to Puerto Rico and not visiting the Dominican Republic ? Or why an American traveller comes to Puerto Rico and he can't go to Santo Domingo, La Romana or Punta Cana and this event is a historic day.

These consideration are directly linked to the deep concept of Multi - Destination involves visiting multiple locations within a single trip, allowing travellers to experience diverse regions and cultures within a single vacation.

This is an approach offers flexibility and a broader travel ecperience, catering to those seeking to make the most of their travel time and with also potential cost savings.

Air connectivity was another point of relevance in the event concerning an alliance between Arajet Airlines, the flag carrier and largest airline of the Dominican Republic and Frontier Airlines, a major American ultra - low cost airline headquarterred in Denver, Colorado, U.S. that they will join the effort to strengthen the links between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The General Manager of Frontier Airlines, Fernando Vázquez said that the company is very proud to be part of this partnership initiative, highlighting that currently, Frontier operates between 10 to 12 flights from different airports of the United States with destinations including Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and from the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan  Frontier Airlines operates 25 flights a day.

Frontier was the first to create the air base in Puerto Rico after twenty - odd years of not having base, hoping that other airlines will join and continue to grow and bring the economic development that Puerto Rico needs.

The Governor of Puerto Rico recalled that the integration of airlines is expected to offer greater interconnection options stating that this allow you tov therefore more finish the trip in Puerto Rico or end the trip in the Dominican Republic, so the two destinations will give more offer and options.

In addition, the Governor also mentioned that she is seeking to explore how the routes of cruise ships that arrive in Puerto Rico also include the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Consul in Puerto Rico César Cedeño said that he has no doubt that from now Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic will continue to strengthen those ties of friendship, of relationships, which is not new.

The Consul mentioned Eugenio Maria Hostos’ image, famed Puerto Rican philosopher, intellectual, sociologist and educator known as "El Grande Ciudadano del las Américas" the Great citizen of Americas, iconic character of Puerto Rico who also lived in the Dominican Republic where he died in Santo Domingo on 11th August 1903 enhancing the ties between the two Caribbean countries.

Now with this agreement both countries are going to put on the point of the world that the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico are two sister islands and the future in the tourism sector will bring excellent results for both countries.
