Cancún, Mexico | Promoting Religious Tourism with a Unique Sanctuary Diversifying its Offer

Cancún, a Mexican city, on the northern coast of the Yucátan Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea, just north of the coast resort area known as the Riviera Maya, the most populous centre of the state of Quintana Roo, known for its beaches, vibrant nightlife, numerous hotels and resorts, a significant tourist destination in Mexico is promoting religious with a unique sanctuary "El Santuario Maria Desatadora de Nudos",  diversifying its offer.

Religious tourism in Cancún registers a sustained increase, driven mainly by the growing influx to this Sanctuary, which already exceeds one million annual visitors.

"El Santuario Maria Desatadora de Nudos", The Sanctuary of Mary Untier of Knots, is located in the Jardines del Sur area away from the hustle and bustle of Cancún's hotel zone, in a place which was once a virgin forest and its construction was perfectly adapted to its surroundings.

The architecture of the Sanctuary features a Caribbean, Oriental and mystical style, rustic and crafted entirely of wood, an eco - designed building in the Cancún's jungle, a religious site which has become a place o prayer, meditation and also inclusion.

The Virgin is originally from Germany, in fact the original painting is in Augsburg, famous city in the Bavarian part of Swabia, around 50 kilometres west of Munich.

She's called the Untier of knots because she is said to intercede for people's problems, she holds a ribbon with knots, which refer to people's difficulties, and she unties them with her hands.

The Sanctuary was built so that believers in the divinity could visit it search of support, comfort and miracles, and her cult teaches that her immeasurable love is capable of granting requests and resolving conflicts for those who pray to her earnestly.

According to the Bishop of Quintana Roo, Pedro Pablo Elizondo, a 30% increase in the influx of visitors to this sanctuary is expected during Holy Week. This trend has been enhanced by the promotion of the site through social networks, where travel agencies and tour operators offer packages to visit this religious site locates in the southern area of Cancún.

The Rector of the Sanctuary, Luis Pablo Garza, explained that the religious site receive an average of 18.000 visitors per week, both from the interior of the country and from abroad.

To cope with the increase in tourists, the infrastructure of the place has been reinforced with the incorporation of a tourist inn called El Refugio, which has restrooms, dining rooms and was also establihed a parking space for more than 400 vehicles.

In addition, information pole were installed at the Sanctuary to enhance the visitor experience and provide details about the significance and history of the site.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria Desatadora de Nudos is consolidated as a new pole of tourist attraction in the city, not only for its spiritual value, but also for its ability to integrate with traditional sun and beach tourism, and a way for Cancún to diversify its tourist offer.

As additional note as reported by REPORTUR.mx, in November 2024, with an investment of 90 million pesos, about $4.5 million and in three stages of construction, the renovation project of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Cancún was announced which with the new religious building concept of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Desatadora de Nudos and the Estrella del Mar Church, in order to attract religious tourism established themselves as an important hub for religious tourism in the region.
