Cozumel, Mexico | Launched a Project to Expand its Port to Receive 4 Cruise Ships Simultaneously

Cozumel, an island and municipality in the Caribbean Sea, off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo, a popular cruise ship port of call and a famed destination for its scuba diving, clear waters and vibrant marine life, especially around sites like the Palancar Reef and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef  attract underwater enthusiasts from all over the world, and also famous for its pristine beaches, Mayan ruins and a relevant cultural and historical heritage launched a project to expand its port to receive 4 cruise ships simultaneously.

The cruise port will be expanded thanks to an investment by SSA Marine Mexico, a renowned group headquartred in Manzanillo which operates in the main Mexican ports offering various services include automobile, container cruise, general cargo terminals, logistic services, facilitating efficient global trade across five continents.

The company will inject 882 million pesos, about $44.0 million into the dock and intends according to an established plan that the destination can receive up to four vessels simultaneously.

The project delivered to Semarnat, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, establishes that the pier will grow from 332 metres to 412 metres in length by 24 metres in width, and in addition to contemplating the construction of a structure of 24 by 24 metres.

According to the document, the renovation of Cozumel's port will allow large cruise ships to dock at the same time, including Royal Caribbena Icon of the Seas and Legend of the Seas megaships.

The report delivered by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources explained that of the total investment of 882 million pesos, 5.543.458 pesos are contemplated for implementation of mitigation measures and compensation of environmental impacts of the project.

It should be remembered that different environmental groups have rejected the expansion of the Cozumel cruise port, pointing out that it would affect coral farm managed by Coral Reef Restoration, an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring endangered coral reefs.
