InterContinental Hotels Group, marketed as IHG Hotels & Resorts, well-known British multinational company based in Windsor - Berkshire has launched its Low Carbon Pioneers programme, which brings together energy-efficient hotels without burning fossil fuels and powered by renewable energy.
The first hotels to be members of the Low Carbon Pioneers program are Kimpton BEM Budapest – Iberostar Waves Cristina – Spain, Holiday Inn Express Madrid Airport – Spain.
The group will help IHG test, learn and share results on sustainability measures. Each hotel will operate initiatives such as high-efficiency heat pumps for heating and hot water production as well as fully electric cookers. Hotels will use IHG's Green Engage environmental platform to measure energy data.
Each hotel will also have an operational sustainability certification recognized by the Global Sustainable Council as a Green Key or a sustainable building certification such as LEED, EDGE and BREEAM and the new hotels will have 12 months to certify from the opening.
The primary goal is to inspire other hotels to join the Low Carbon Pioneers program and IHG Hotels & Resorts is also developing a group of "low carbon ready" hotels in preparation for when there will be the possibility of fully supporting all energy with renewable energy in countries or districts where this is not currently available.
The full criteria for membership including the five requirements of the program are explained in the following link mentioned below.

The CEO of IHG Hotels & Resorts enthusiastically stated that the group's launch of the Low Carbon Pioneers program is an innovative way to meet evolving guest expectations by helping hotel owners future-proof their businesses by reducing carbon emissions across all of the group's properties.
Undoubtedly this program is an important step forward in IHG Hotels & Resorts' sustainability journey but it remains one of many to continue to undertake.
The acceleration of large-scale change that includes IHG Hotels & Resorts and the industry at large requires broader support from governments, which means greater access to renewable energy and incentives for owners, a reduction in the cost of technology that accelerates the industry's transition to a greener and more resilient future.
IHG Hotels & Resorts is committed to working with industry bodies and governments to help achieve this goal as well as encouraging more owners to adopt carbon reduction practices and become low-carbon pioneers.
Hotels will be marketed as low-carbon or low-carbon ready through IHG Hotels & Resorts' booking channels.
