The Regional Department of Tourism, the FS Italiane Foundation and FS Treni Turistici Italiani have launched a very captivating initiative that allows you to discover the charm and beauty of Sicily aboard historic trains, undoubtedly an excellent proposal to visit a pearl of the Mediterranean travelling on convoys of the 30s giving unique experiences to travellers.
Linked to all that a calendar has been drawn up with a first departure set for September 14, 2024 which includes a program on board that incluses 33 appointments that will continue until December 08 of the current year.
Among the destinations that can be reached is Agrigento, splendid, historic city with a great historical, cultural and artistic heritage 'founded around 581/582 BC by the Greek colonists of Gela and then known as Akragas, one of the most important centers in the golden age of ancient Greece.
Great opportunity to admire the iconic Valley of the Temples, archaeological park and monumental nucleus between the maritime area of San Leone and the hill of Montelusa characterized by the exceptional preservation of a complex of important Doric temples of the Hellenic period included in 1997 in the list of World Heritage Sites drawn up by UNESCO.
Other destinations are Santo Stefano di Camastra, a historic center in the province of Messina in the Nebrodi Park, Caltagirone, a fascinating center of the province of Catania with its millenary history and its emblematic production of ceramics, majolica and terracotta, Syracuse, a jewel of the Ionian coast well known for its ancient ruins and the central Archeological Park Neapolis comprise the Roman Amphiteatre, the Greek Theatre and the iconic Orecchio di Dionisio.
Other historic destinations are the charming Ortigia, the stupendous Archaeological Park of Selinunte, the captivating Modica hosting the annual chocolate festival, all that with scheduled departures from Palermo, Catania and Messina.
In addition thanks to the collaboration with the Circumetnea Railway the tourists can reach other centres of great historical and cultural importance such as Giarre and Bronte.
Tickets for this unique experience are already available and as an additional information note these historic trains on board can carry up to 50 bicycles.
