Cancún, popular Mexican city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo well known for its beaches, numerous resorts, tropical weather and vibrant nighlife appears in the list of five Mexican cities preferred by international tourists where they can get some kind of medical treatment.
The Mexican city, according to data collected by the competent, local bodies, receives about 25.000 medical procedures every year, consolidating itself in the top five as far as medical tourism destinations is concerned.
The President of Coparmex, the Commission for Medical Tourism of the Confederation of Employers of the Mexican Republic, independent and voluntary employers'union that brings together business people of all sizes and sectors in the country Andrés Jurado confirmed these data by pointing out that it was an estimated number of visitors between 20.000 and 25.000 patients with an average stay of 11 nights and an economic impact of over $10.500 per night.
In the whole Mexico the specialties with the greatest demand are generally plastic surgery and bariatric surgery while currently the orthopedic surgery and joint surgery are notably increasing and they intend that in the Mexican Caribbean zone there are excellent, specialized and certified clinics highly prepared to provide these services.
Alongside all that there are other specialties apart the previously mentioned with a high demand as dentistry and there are increasingly new proposals in Cancún that at national level consolidated itself in the top 5 cities that receive patients.
In this way, medical tourism has been the driver of notable investments that undoubtedly benefit the residents of the destination since they can also better access to other medical options.
In the city of Cancún there are currently three hospitals with international certification and they hope that more clinics will have these important distinctions and generate greater confidence, arguing that border cities are still the leaders in this sector including Tijuana in the State of Baja California which is also on third place worldwide.
The private initiative has made an effort to promote medical tourism with commitment since both hospitals and clinics carried out a series of actions and the intention is for more people to know about health benefits that a destination as Cancún offers.
