Italy has been facing the infamous phenomenon of Overtourism for some time and Pompei, famous municipality in the metropolitan city of Naples in the Campania region, home of the famed archaeological excavations of the ancient Roman city with its ruins that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites has decided to introduce an indicator as a deterrent limiting the number of visitors to fight it.
This important archaeological site, overlooked by the active volcan Vesuvius, located in a vast plain at eastern borders of the Neapolitan province with its urban area contiguous with Scafati in the province of Salerno, announced on 8th November the adoption and introduction of a meter in response to its growing popularity and the enormous tourist flows it suffers a long time ago.
Pompei has always been an unmissable destination in Campania, the statistics are eloquent, it's enough to consider that in 2023 the number of visitors increased by 33.6% compared to 2022, data that translates into a daily average of 11.200 visitors according to data recorded by the Ministry of Culture.
From 15th November 2024, the Archaeological Park of Pompei will limit the number to 20.000 visitors per day, a measure that comes after a record season with more than 4 million people visiting the iconic archaeological site, including 36.000 in a single day.
From now on, each visitor will be given a personalized entrance ticket on which his full name appears as well as indicating a specific time slot for the visit.
The Director of the archaeological park Gabriel Zuchtriegel commented that there are a series of projects to reduce the anthropogenic pressure on the site that can be a risk both for people, for example in the event of an earthquake and for the heritage that is so unique and very fragile.
As an additional note, the Archaeological Park of Pompei wants to promote other sites in the local area such as Boscoreale, located in the Vesuvius National Park, well known for its vineyards and production of fine wines and Torre Annunziata, centre which extends into the innermost inlet of the Gulf of Naples in a narrow strip of land between the Vesuvius and the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Sarno River Regional Park.
