Macau, special and autonomous region of China, which maintains separate governing systems from those of mainland country, situated on the south coast of China reflecting a mix of cultural infleunces, nicknamed "Las Vegas of Asia" for a its giant casinos and malls on the Cotai Strip received more international visitors last November than in the same month of 2019, for the first time, since the end of the covid – 19 pandemic.
DST, the Macau Tourism Board in a statement said that according to official data, more than 241.000 visitors coming from abroad arrived in the territory in November 2024, a value which represents an increase of 20.9% compared to the same month in 2023 and an increase of 7% compared to the same period in 2019.
At the time the Director of Tourism Services of Macau, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said that she expected the autonomous region of China to be able to receive more than 3 million international visitors by 2025.
Chinese authorities have expanded the list of places with individual visas to visit Hong Kong and Macau to 10 more cities in China.
In the fist eleven months of 2024, Macau welcomed nearly 31.9 million visitors, up 26.2% from the same period last year and 87.8% compared to January and November 2019.
In 2023, Macau received 28.2 million visitors, about five times more than the previous year, although still far from the record of 39.4 million set in 2019.
