The history of the first former settlement started in medieval times, exactly in the 12th century with a local population linked to the descendants of the Alemanni, a Germanic group well known since centuries before for its clashes with the Roman Empire protagonist of several incursions in the Northern Italic Peninsula. Those ancient inhabitants settled under the magnificent silhouette of the Jungfrau they were originally mainly farmers, woodcutters and artisans living a peaceful life before to have desire to expansion their domains with including challenging the powerful Imperial Rome.

The first documents in which the name of that centre appeared in official maps was recorded for the first time in the 13th century, concretely in 1268 despite the denomination of the current resort is still unclear. Probably it derives from something linked to the first settlers of that specific Alpine area, the only detail according historic to researches is that name could be originally Wengue in those times but nothing more.

The community established in the Middle Ages in the local boundaries lived for a long time practically aisled from the rest of the territory of the Canton for a lack of infrastructures and connections to many other centres and the only way in that time to reach other destinations was by old and steep paths leading to the nearest villages of Mürren, Gimmelwald, Isenfluh, Stechelberg and Lauterbrunnen which all together later formed under the same political administration the current municipality taking the name of the latter.

Some historic information reported that there was a terrible plague in the 17th century in that land decimating the local population while other documentations dating back the 18th century certified a terrible avalanche in 1770 , a sad episode in which some locals died and sadly a further event occurred in 1791 when a landslide killed other inhabitants.

Thirty years later in 1889 was built the railroad linking the Wengernalp to the resort, a work totally ended four years later in 1893. That impressive civil engineering masterpiece over 19,0 kilometres long in the Alps was undoubtedly a wonderful facility which consecrated that site as a Top destination ever since. That construction was a fantastic and very significant stage of a country as Switzerland which was already admired worldwide for its stunning and advanced network of communications in a land practically filled by high mountains but offering despite that difficulty to establish with a hard but successful results infrastructures among the best in the globe and that operation was a further one of extreme fame.

Thanks also to that in 2001, Wengen was declared World Heritage site by UNESCO as part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch and all that is undoubtedly another outstanding award in the relevant curriculum of that Swiss resort and naturally pride of its inhabitants.

The resort is also well known worldwide to be a sort of Sacred Temple of winter sports and especially regarding Alpine Ski. Wengen is one of the most fantastic stages and appointments for the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup which takes places every year at the foot of the towering Jungfrau.

The name of that Swiss Alpine pearl is like to watch a special and exciting movie returning to the iconic course of the most legendary Alpine Ski history narrating some of the most prestigious pages of that kind of sport written on the local slopes.

In that place you are in an emblematic site which offers the pleasure of skiing at the highest level and much more exciting because you are on the soil of an absolute legend, something of mythical in its kind.

Alpine Ski World Cup has in Wengen one of its most distinctive landmarks with the glorious Lauberhorn since 1930 as protagonist, a track among the most spectacular in the International panorama which crowned unforgettable champions and icons of that sport such as Sailer, Schranz, Molitor, Klammer, Ghedina, Girardelli, Kernen, Maier and Bode Miller among others, in brief the Ski Elite all time in the downhill speciality.

The fame of the resort is furthermore increased by the Downhill Only Club well known to be one of the oldest Alpine Ski Clubs in England founded five years before the first edition of the Lauberhorn Trophy celebrated in 1925.

The prestige linked to all that consecrated that place as one of the Queens of the Alps and also it became extremely famous with that special nickname Leute aus Jungfrau which means people from Jungfrau in honour of that superb and mythical mountain dominating the village and the valley, authentic and scenic emblem, a mount which with its unique and wonderful image transmits great vibrations at first sight to every skier and fans.

Thousands and thousands of people love to assist to that more than legendary competition of the World Cup live and furthermore many other Alpine Ski fans watching it on TV. That event could be compared to a Paris-Roubaix or Milan-Sanremo in cycling or Wimbledon or Roland Garros in Tennis, a special appointment which since its inception was elevated as an emblem in its kind.

Wengen thanks to the Lauberhorn is one of the most famous places known by all people fond about winter sports and nobody want to miss the spectacular races which take place on that legendary track.

The Lauberhorn is just like the Streif for Kitzbuhel, one of the most glorious in the world, absolutely stunning and simply uniqueit is the longest race with its 4455, 0 metres, one of the most challenging downhills in the globe, very technique, and on that superb slop the professional athletes in a space of a little bit more of two minutes starting from 2315, 0 metres and ending their effort at 1028, 0 metres of altitude reach the arrival.

Since its development  it is considered a more than challenging piste for all the big changes of slopes in those almost four and half kilometres corresponding to its  length with over 1,000 metres of difference in level,  another incredible feature is that the speed changes in a while from about 40,0 km/h to 160,0 km/h along the track, a detail simply unique in its kind.

The faster section of that downhill is the emblematic Haneggschluss, a stunning straight situated before the Ziel, the arrival with a very flashing finish very impressive because if you are just 50, 0 metres from it, the skier comes like an arrow disappearing in less than one second from your view.

The iconic jump called Hundschopf is another stunning point and landmark of that legendary track with a slope of 93% it is an absolute symbol of the Lauberhorn, a section in which the skiers have to plan in just one second or less a right choice of line, coordination and furthermore coming there with an excellent vision reading the track in those 120 seconds or less facing in that concrete site a focal point of the race.

Pure technique and talent linked to a strong physical and mental preparation are the keys to be highly competitive on that striking slope, it is not enough to have fantastic ski waxes and advanced materials, that race was made to crown true champions.

The Hundschopf is certainly another thrilling section in which the skier faces several risks consisting in a spectacular jump of approximately 40,0 metres over a sharp rocky spurs. Without coordination and in a not right position considering the high speed of that track an athlete can meet several difficulties compromising the performance and bye bye victory, podium or a good position in the top ten for all that the Hundschopf is highly considered and sometimes including feared.

The Russisprung is another icon well known by all the lovers of Alpine Ski and in particular fans of the World Cup and Wengen downhill history. Elevated as a sort of monument along the Lauberhorn.

That jump located in a very steep straight takes the name by a famed Swiss champion Bernhard Russi, gold medal in occasion of the Winter Olympic Games celebrated in Sapporo in Japan in 1972 and twice downhill World Champion. That former skilled Alpine skier star was one of the best specialists in the 70s and he decided to try the Lauberhorn in a very unusual way to show the difficulties and the track features in a special and exciting TV documentary.

That unforgettable champion from Andermatt, a very lovely town in the Canton of Uri was looking for something particular to exalt the most splendid ski downhill technique along a track he loved very much and he was inspired to transmit his sensations, vibrations to the public and enthusiastic skiers.

Another aspect was also that to give particular suggestions to many people fond about that spectacular speciality and you can consider that stunning performance as a sort of a special Educational exhibition to explain how an athlete has to face certain slopes to be owner of his body finding a perfect coordination dominating the skis and the track at determined speeds.

Mr. Russi during that unforgettable performance found a perfect coordination and he was recorded in a very stylish and spectacular image on that Sprung (Jump) and thanks to such memorable immortalised exploit since then that unique corner became for all the famous Russisprung, the Russi Jump.

The Traversenschusse is another outstanding highlight of the Lauberhorn where the skier after a spectacular curve needs to have an almost perfect position because the speed changes in a very short time from about 95 km/h to over 130 km/h, in how long ?... approximately 5-6 seconds.

Undoubtedly on such track a well trained professional athlete also needs strong legs combined with a very fast brain receiving immediate inputs to follow the lines. All that is extremely fundamental, the risks are many, the concentration is obviously a must, that steep downhill is not a joke or a lottery, the research to find the right aerodynamic position is another aspect pretty relevant, nothing easy considering a sum of conditions and situations.

The Lauberhorn is not that kind of downhill in which the winner is simply that one has the fastest skies prepared with the perfect ski waxes and the high technology used in the development of the sheets is the most important feature, the material is undoubtedly important but it is not the main feature..That amazing track is all concentrated in those famous 2 minutes and all that is mainly condensed in an innate talent, stunning skills combined to a refined technique something very difficult to create in a day.

The Lauberhorn is also famous for the Trophy of the combined competition and  apart the classic and prestigious downhill race the program includes the very spectacular Slalom too. The sum of the points in those two specialities awards the winner with the title.

Along that track as further detail was filmed in the 60s the famous movie starring Gene Hackman and Robert Redford titled Downhill Racer

The Lauberhorn is a legend and calls every year a myriad of people to enjoy that race in a spectacular atmosphere among the best of the entire season. There is always a fantastic atmosphere with many opportunities also to establish very friendly relationship with other fans because it is also a feast in which also ordinary people are protagonists and that is an experience I suggest to everyone. I went there twice and honestly I would like to come back a third.

It is so easy to know and having a chat with Swiss, German, Scandinavian, Austrian, Italian American, Canadian and other people of different nationalty all them are there with the same philosophy to assist to a spectacular event and spending a very pleasant time.

Ended the race is usual to go to eat together or simply to have a cool beer or a warm coffee, talking about the race, other things and obviously of Wengen and after that in many cases is a “see you next year if you can or " it will be a pleasure to see you once again” and that is …Wengen in all its splendour also for that,  tourism, sport, ski and passion which link people from different parts of the world reaching that stunning place in the Alps and all that is simply great.

There are many reasons because that great site is so loved by Winter Sport people and it is also related to its superb services and facilities. The famous Ski complex provides all the ski lifts facilities developed in a very organised system to permit the visitor to reach the slopes in a very fast way without wasting time in long transfers or intermediate long stages.

Furthermore the resort offers black, red and blue slopes, all that means an open gateway to people of all levels, starting from al lthose who want to learn skiing and also that is great thanks to the presence of excellent and prestigious Ski Schools.

Seven Black pistes, seventeen red tracks and eight blue slopes, for a total of 32 stunning tracks, 23 ski lifts and 112, 0 kilometres of downhill pistes only in Wengen which is part of the Jungfrau Region Ski Area which offers a total of 378, 0 kilometres of pistes, 66 ski lifts. Those numbers are absolutely impressive  that is an absolute Empire, admired worldwide and simply outstanding.

The best places for the beginners are in the area of Allmend and Männlichen south of the Wengernalp with some others in the area of Kleine Scheidegg. The intermediate skiers can also enjoy many pistes in those points but also at the foot of the Eiger glacier and including some in the Lauberhorn and  many kilometres of red tracks are also in Honegg and at the foot of the Tschuggen.

For experienced skiers, 22,0 kilometres of tracks are available starting from the top corresponding to the Jungfrau and obviously the Lauberhorn on the slopes of the World Cup races and in addition along all the axis between Grindenwald and Gimmelwald, the latter a bit north from Wengen.

A great detail as in all the Swiss resorts is the stupendous preparation of the snow, you will never find there that unpleasant sort of flour which generates a very low sliding of the skis and neither the presence of dangerous ice blocks which could damage the materials Wengen is a fantastic place extremely appropriate and fantastic to ski saving your skis and enjoying 100% those tracks and it is also a destination particularly loved by snowboarders who find there one of the best places in Europe for the shape and length of the local pistes.

That stupendous resort also offers approximately 17,0 kilometres of stunning trails to practise Nordic Ski, concretely that speciality called Ski Cross Country a further joy for those who love that activity or for people who desire to try a great experience in a natural environment simply fabulous crossing virgin forests in a scenery absolutely amazing.

That Swiss resort is also a relevant place hosting important events all year. One of them among the most famous is Mendelssohn Music Week which takes place every August consisting in a Music Festival in honour of the famous German composer Felix Mendelssohn who visited and promoted Wengen abroad.

Easter is a period in which the resort lives other magic times of its cultural calendar with Mariottembüne Wengen, a splendid event consisting in shows of puppet theatre calling many people from all the Bern Canton and other areas of Switzerland.September is the month in which starts the ski season highlighted by Nordic Ski celebrating a splendid appointment called Jungfrau Marathon consisting in a race of 42, 0 kilometres skiing beneath the towering and iconic Jungfrau. That race is simply spectacular for the big number of skiers protagonists in that competition but also for a large participation of public with a very lovely,  lively and at the same time vibrant atmosphere.

The name of that centre is also linked to fairytale, stories and legends as that one called Pfeifende Lurch, a story related to a kind of amphibian creature present only in that geographic area which created a sort of legendary myth  present in suggestive narrations and captivating stories.

Local gastronomy is delicious playing an important role, satisfying all the most demanding palates and in the resort thanks to excellent restaurants and many Hotels which offer the visitor a great selection of the most exquisite cuisine with menu à la carte you will have the great chance to chose many local delicious specialities and delectable Iinternational specialities making Wengen a sort of a culinary paradise.

Very traditional is the exquisite and typical Rösti, a plate consisting in potatoes, meat, onion, cheese and bacon, an iconic delight you can not miss. The local Cheeses are simply superb and the emblematic Emmental does not need introductions. Meat in particular beef and pork are excellent, baked, grilled and used in several stews or roasts.

Another Swiss National plate you can find there the famous Fondue often present in several gastronomic establishments and about sweet products you are in the territory of  of the best chocolate in the world. Furthermore notable is the wide selection of homemade cakes and biscuits thanks to an excellent production of butter of high quality.

In the case you have plans to visit Wengen and its surroundings I added some links below with also some very suggested Hotels to enjoy a very pleasant and comfortable stay.
