Azerbaijan | Landmark Agreement with Uzbekistan to Boost Global Iconic Silk Road Appeal

Azerbaijan, a landlocked country of West Asia and Eastern Europe, a former Soviet Republic bounded by the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea established a landmark agreement with the neigboring country, Uzbekistan to boost global iconic Silk Road appeal.

This historic and strategic agreement aims at advancing regional tourism cooperation was signed in Samarkand, emblematic city of Uzbekistan and is a plan focuses on fostering joint initiatives along the emblematic Silk Road enhancing both countries’ presence in the global tourism market, and developing shared offerings.

 The Silk Road, linking China to the west, was a very important network of ancient trade routes that facilitated cultural, economic political and religious interactions between the European and Western world from the second country BCE to the mid 15th century.

This historical road spanning over 6.400 kilometres represented a major route for the exchange of silk, spices, ceramics and other goods and beyond the trade it also served as a sort of conduit for the exchange of ideas, religions and technologies, influencing the cultures and civilizations of the Eurasian people.

The meeting between the Deputy Chairperson of Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency, Azada Huseynova and the Chairman of Uzbekistan’s Tourism Committee, Umid Shadiev was a pivotal moment in strengthening bilateral tourism relations and the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Azerbaijan Tourism Board and Uzbekistan’s National PR Centre.

The agreement signed by CEO of the Azerbaijan Tourism Board, Florian Sengstschmid, and the Director of the National PR Centre of Uzbekistan, Dilshod Murodullaev sets the stage for joint efforts to enhance tourism flows revitalising a road which was for centuries an epicentre of culture, history and trade.

The conversations during the meeting were centered on ways to deepen collaboration, leverage the historical Silk Road and engage with captivating proposals on international tourism platforms.

The “Silk Road Tours” initiative aims to boosting tourist numbers, expanding both countries visibility in Central European and global tourism markets is a strategy to create  co - branded tourism products, a pillar key enhancing the  partnership between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan and also an alliance which includes plans for joint campaigns and B2B meetings. 

In addition The Deputy Chairperson of Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency, Azada Huseynova met the Director of the UN Tourism Academy in Samarkand, Dilshod Narzikulov, to launch a collaboration also in terms of tourism edication. 

 As part of the meeting program, the Azerbaijan Delegation visited the Silk Road International University of Tourism and Cultural Heritage and both sides agreed to undertake joint research through the University’s Silk Road Research Center.

This research will focus on enhancing the Silk Road as a unique tourism product, combining academic knowledge with practical initiatives.
