The Ministry of Social Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, historically known in its first stage simply as the Ministry of Social Affairs, identified the existence of more than 15.200 illegal tourist flats in the capital and largest city of Spain, Madrid.
With the centre of the city, suffocated by illegal tourist flats the Ministry asked the City Council to remove their advertisements, following the model of Barcelona which faced the same problem.
According to EFE, S.A., Spanish international news agency, the department led by Pablo Bustinduy has delivered to the Madrid City Council a digital file containing 16.335 advertisements for tourist flats, while the number of licences granted is only 1.131.
The data includes addresses, details of the accommodation, as well as the indications of illegality in these homes, with Madrid authorities revealing the location of the 1.008 licensed tourist flats.
In addition, the report includes thousands of links to lisiting published or rental platforms, segmented by registration number with detailed features, information and characteristics of the accommodation.
With this relevant data, the aims is for municipal inspection services to identify and act against owners who operate without a licence.
The Ministry said that is a very worrying figure and he pointed out, which is why it urges the mayor, José Luis Martinez Almeida, to remove advertisements for tourist homes that do not comply with regulations and it is essential to put an end to this illicit activity that limits citizens right to housing.
The Minister recalled that, after sanctioning a rental platform named "Booking" in December 2024 is the City Council that can act for non - compliance with municipal regulations and for this reason, it calls for "decisive action" to stop this activity, taking Barcelona as a reference, which has managed to remove thousands of advertisements and recover homes for residential rental.
