Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island and unincorporated U.S. territory in the Greater Antilles, a unique destination, known for its vibrant culture, rich history, stunning beaches, mountains, waterfalls and tropical rainforests launched a plan of tourism transformation with projects led by students from the public system.
As part od the public policy of the Government of Puerto Rico to promote the economic and cultural development of the Caribbean Island, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Jennifer González Colón, the Executive Director of PRTC, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Willianette Robles Cancel and the Secretary of DE, the Department of Education, Eliezer Ramos Parés signed a collaborative agreement to initiate a series of revitalization projects in areas of tourism interest.
The initiative begins in heart of the historic centre of the emblematic Old San Juan in the beating heart of the capital and major centre of the island, home to some of the oldest and most revered religious landmarks in the Western Hemisphere, from the stunning San Juan Cathedral to the historic Capilla del Cristo, where elements of tourism, gastronomy, music, culture, history and sports will be integrated through community interventions by students from the public system.
This interagency alliance between the Government and the Education System represents a multisectorial effort to promote beautification, community development and student participation as tools to strengthen cultural identity and improve the tourist experience.
The project will be implemented in phases, starting with the creation of a mural with artistic mosaics on Calle Norzagaray, a captivating street with beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean and colurful houses and the visual transformation of Plaza Dársena, a lively square overlooking San Juan Bay that has always been a centre for friends to meet and enjoy music and art in the area of thye Old San Juan docks.
As part of the agreement, the Tourism Company will provide the necessary materials for and other structural improvements, while the Department of Education will coordinate the participation of students from public schools specializing in Fine Arts.
Interested schools will submit artistic proposals, and the most outstanding will be selected to execute the project. As a prize, the winning student will receive an educational trip paid for by the Tourism Company and will have the opportunity to complete hours of practice in their regional offices.
The initiative is designed to eventually be extended to other tourist areas around Puerto Rico, according to the joint identification and evaluation of spaces of high historical and cultural value. This collaboration will lay the groundwork for future impact projects that raise Puerto Rico's profile as a destination and foster a sense of pride among residents and visitors.
The Governor of Puerto Rico, Jennifer González Colón said that the signing of this memorandum of understanding responds to the government vision and commitment, establishing as a priority the strengthening of the island's strategic sectors through multisectoral alliances.
This public policy recognizes tourism as a key economic and cultural pillar, and education as a catalyst for progress and community development.
The Executive Director of Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Willianette Robles Cancel stated that education and tourism converge here as agents of social transformation. This initiative not only beautifies local tourist spaces, but also creates opportunities for Puerto Rican young people to contribute to their environment and project themselves to the world as cultural ambassadors.
With this effort it's possible to give life to a public policy that recognizes the value of sustainable tourism and the talent of Puerto Rico's youth as engines of development.
The Secretary of the Department of Education, Eliezer Ramos Parés, indicated that learning takes on a new meaning when it is connected with reality and service. This agreement offers local students a platform to put their talents to use while also contributing to the local communities, and the Department of Education is proud to collaborate in a project that promotes civility, creativity and a sense of belonging.
