Porto, the second largest city in Portugal, after Lisbon, capital of the Porto District and one of the Iberian Peninsula’s major urban area, a centre with a rich cultural and historical heritage and a top destination in the international tourism landscape now has two new instruments for promoting tourism in the city : The Plan Your Journey digital platform and the renewed Official Tourist Map of Porto, which have been just launched by the municipality.
These two relevant projects are pointed out as a materialization of the destination’s promotion strategy, which organizes the city of Porto into eight tourist blocks, with the purpose of promoting the decentalization of tourist flows, the appreciation of local authenticity and the balance between the experience of visitors and the quality of life of residents.
The Councillor for Tourism and Internationalization of the Porto City Council, Catarina Santos Cunha said that these new instruments are born from the desire to show more Porto beyond the traditional circuits and revealing the multiple cultural, human and historical layers of the city.
The creation of tourist blocks and the investment in new narratives and thematic routes are key pieces to position Porto as a more balanced, inclusive and sustainable destination.
The new digital platform Plan Your Journey, available in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French, invites visitors to explore the city’s tourist offer afield in the city and not just concentrate in the historic downtown area., presenting itineraries and points of interest organized by themes, a true discovery guide, with immersive multimedia content, including first - person testimonies and videos with documentary record.
The first four itineraries available are : “Handicrafts and Culture”, “Silence”, “Echoes of Literature” and “Atlantic”. The connection to the gastronomic offer is also reinforced in the new portal, with suggestions for restaurants that in all their essence represent the local identity.
The Official Tourist Map of Porto with a renewed design was also presented, a new tool to support the tourism sector. Distributed at the tourist offices, airport and several other points of interest, including accommodation units and other equipment for welcoming guests and visitors, the map will make known the new configuration of the city’s tourism promotion, based on eight blocks, with itineraries include the areas of Baixa Histórico, Boavista, Atlântico, Campanhã, Bomfim, República and Universitário.
