Puerto Vallarta, a renowned resort town nestled between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in Jalisco State, Mexico, a vibrant city known for its rich culture, stunning lanscapes, attractive beaches, water sports and a vibrant nighlife scene is undergoing a major expansion of its international Airport with the development of a second terminal to meet rising tourism demand and elevate the destination's global connectivity.
This relevant project is expected to double capacity and streamline the travel experience for millions of passengers annually, an expansion that also supports broader efforts to diversify Puerto Vallarta visitor base in order to make the city more of a year - round destination.
According to GAP, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, which operates the Mexican airport, the project represents an investment of $187 million and the new second terminal will feature updated technology, sustainable design elements and improved services to enhance thr passenger experience.
Terminal 2. 40% complete as of March, is on track for completion by the end of 2025 and once operational, it will increase the airport's capacity to more than 8 million passenger per year with an expansion that will add more than 957.000 square feet of infrastructure.
The upgraded airport facilities will include expanded customs and immigration areas, modernized baggage handling, additional gates and upgraded amenities for both leisure and business travellers.
Puerto Vallarta has experienced record - breaking traffic in recent years. In 2023 and 2024 the resort town welcomed more thsn 6 million visitors.
The growing number of International arrivals, particularly from the United States of America, Canada and Europe, has created an urgent need to scale up infrastructure and services for a constant increasing demand.
The Director of the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust, Luis Villasenor said that the Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board has focused on recent objecvtives, including a strategy to diversify its visitors base by attracting younger travellers and seeking business from South America and Europe and this approach aims to offset the seasonal fluctuations in demand for the destination.
Puerto Vallarta Tourism Trust head highlighted that other infrastructure projects are part of of $9.3 million investment in public infrastructure in the state of Jalisco that include :
• Widened sidewalks and bike lanes.
• A new road north of the airport equipped to handle 116,000 vehicles a day.
• A new fleet of eco – friendly, air conditioned buses that will launch in the second half of 2025.
Another government measure to alleviate the city's traffic congestion is to develop two new docks, one in Mismaloya and in El Centro that will connect travellers and cargo to the docks in Boca de Tomatlan, Los Muertos, Quimixto and Yelapa.
