Aveiro, a city on the west coast of Portugal, and capital of the district of the same name, set along a lagoon called Ria de Aveiro which connects to the Atlantic Ocean, a centre often referred to as the "Portuguese Venice" for its canals navigated by colourful wooden boats, called "moiliceiros" similar to gondolas and highlighted by its stunning art nouveau buildings, a relevant culinary offer making it a very attractive mix of history, art, nature, and gastronomy, will invest around €500.000 in a collective renewable energy self - consumption project for its port.
The note linked to this initiative states that this project is part of the Energy Transition Strategy approved by the Port of Aveiro Administration and is in line with the goals of the European Green Deal and the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Goals, which foresee a 55% reduction in GHC emission by 2030.
The project is being financed by the PRR, the Recovery and Resilience Plan through the Environmental Fund and works are expected to start later this year, according to information provided by the Port of Aveiro Administration.
According to a press release, the Port of Aveiro Administration will install electricity production units at three locations : one at the North Terminal, another at the Coastal Fishing Port, and the third at the Liquid Bulk Terminal.
The project estimates that the three Self - Consumption Production Units (UPAC) will produce a total of 656.553.32 kilowatts per year, allowing for self - consumption of over 80%.
The implementation should result in a reduction in electricity consumption of 575.891 92 kilowatts per year, representing a decrease in greenhouse gases in CO2 equivalent of 49.52 tonnes per year.
Finally the Port Administration's note points out that the initiative aligns with the SDGS, Sustainable Development Goals and the European Union's guidelines for climate transition.
