La Romana, The Dominican Republic | Significant Hotel Expansion with a Room Capacity Close to 6.000

La Romana, a city on the Dominican Republic’s Caribbean coast, capital of the southeastern province of La Romana located opposite Catalina Island, known for its stunning beaches, luxury leading hotels and resorts, water sports, coral reefs that are perfect for snorkeling,  golf courses and a world - class marina, has hotels is experiencing significant hotel expansion, with new  constructions and renovations pushing the total room capacity close to 6.000.

This hotel expansion is driven by La Romana’s popularity among tourists seeking a mix of relaxation, and cultural experience and the new hotels cater to various traveler preferences, including all - inclusive resorts, adults - only options, and family - friendly accommodation offering in this way numerous options.

This growth is also fueled by the area’s appeal as a tourist destination, particularly for its beaches, golf courses, and proximity to cultural attractions like Altos de Chavón, a re - created 16th century Mediterranean village with artists’ workshops.

La Romana currently has about 5.800 active hotel rooms and an average occupancy in 2024 of more than 80%, receiving more than 1.5 million annual visitors, more than 400.000 cruise passengers and a growing international air flow, with a generation of more than 43.000 direct and indirect jobs.

All that was indicated by the President of AHRB, the La Romana - Bayahibe Hotel Associations, Andrés Fernández highlighting the growth of tourism in the hospitality sector and also stating that La Romana Airport is clearly oriented to the vacation passenger, which responds to the nature of the destination, representing a tourist enclave of great attraction with a solid and varied hotel offer, unique natural environnments and a firm comment to sustainability.

The AHRB President told arecoa.com that there is a notable increase in the arrival of passengers, both by air and sea, which translates into a significant contribution to the hotel plant in the area and to the entire complementary offer of the destination.

The head of the La Romana – Bayahibe Hotel Associations also highlighted the very positive impact that tourism from Argentina is having this summer, whose visitors choose La Romana not only for the beauty of its beaches without sargassum, all certified with the Blue Flag program, but also for the family atmosphere of its hotels and the recognized hospitality of the Dominican people that defines the experience in the destination.

This growth benefits diverse sectors such as gastronomy,  the increasingly complete proposal of excursions, mainly to the Saona and Catalina islands, in addition to golf, diving and ecotourism proposals.

The synergy between the different actors of La Romana destination is evident and is bearing great fruit. All bodies and operators join forces to strengthen a comprehensive and sustainable offer, thinking not only about the present, but also about the future of tourism in the region.

Regarding air connectivity the AHRB President mentioned that La Romana has direct links that strengthen its international positioning, such as the daily connection between La Romana and Miami, in addition to weekly operations with relevant European cities such as Madrid, Milan, Rome and Lisbon, to mention a few, which facilitate the arrival of North American and Euroopean tourists to the heart of the Dominican Caribbean.
