Italy | Set to Break Tourism Records this Year

The tourism sector is a significant part of the Italian economy, the country is a major tourist destination globally, ranking fifth in the world for international arrivals, and the travel & tourism industry generates a substantial portion of the nation’s GDP, both directly and indirectly, and it is a key driver for employment. 

The country is rebounding from the pandemic, it’s nearing pre - pandemic visitor numbers thanks to its eternal appeal for its rich cultural and historical heritage, beautiful cities and natural wonders and this year is set to break tourism records with its capital, Rome ready to host WTTC’s 25th Global Summit.

According to new data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) travel and tourism in Italy is poised for a record - breaking year, with international visitor spending forecast to hit an all - time high of €60.4 billion in 2025.

Travel and Tourism is not just back, it’s a booming. With a strong recovery, Italy is is racing ahead, cementing its’s place as Europe’s fourth most popular destination and a global powerhouse of wellness, luxury, culture, cuisine, offering a wide range of attractions, from mountainous regions, idyllic lakes to coastal areas and a multitude of historical sites all around its territory.

Italy's tourism success is driven by a combination of factors, including its rich history and culture, it boasts the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, diverse landscapes, and with a focus on high-quality, sustainable travel experiences. 

Italy’s unique charm supported by strong performance and an outstanding offer is attracting both cultural and leisure tourists, along its well - developed infrastructure, growing emphasis on “Slow Luxury” and digital transformation, contribute to its enduring appeal.

According to WTTC’s latest Economic Impact Research (EIR), the sector is on track to support 3.2 million jobs in 2025, 100.000 more than last year, and contribute €237.4 billion to the Italian economy, nearly 11% of GDP with a domestic tourism remains robust, with spending to reach €124.6 billion.

WTTC President & CEO, Julia Simpson said that Italy is back at the top of travellers’ wish lists and for good reasons.

This record - breaking growth is a tribute to the strength of Italy ‘s Travel & Tourism sector and the passion of the people behind it.

WTTC Global Summit in Rome will bring together leaders who are shaping the future. From Ministers and CEOs to innovators and sustainability champions, Italy is undoubtedly the right place to host an event of such level standing as a model of how Travel & Tourism can power prosperity, cultural pride, and sustainable growth.

Since 2021, Italy has stood out apart among European and G20 countries with a Ministry of Tourism dedicated and very sensitive to the development of the tourism travel and industry, demonstrating a powerful sign of political recognition for the sector’s economic and social value.

The Italian Government has also prioritised sustainability, innovation, and skills, while launching new national campaigns to encourage travellers to discover lesser - known destinations, spreading the benefits of tourism more evenly and responsibly. 

Minister of Tourism, Daniela Santanchè said that for the first time, Italy brought to Rome, and brought back to Europe after six years, the world’s largest event in tourism : the WTTC Global Summit, which sees the participation of key international leaders in the sector. 

Hosting the WTTC Global Summit represents an important moment for the tourism industry and for Italy and is a sign of how much ground the country regained and how returned to be protagonist on the global stage, so much that it has the honour and privilege of hosting events of such prestige.

Especially in a year already so stimulating for Italian tourism, with the ongoing Jubilee and the record figures Italy is registering, the Summit further projects with its capital and the country towards continuous growth. 

The WTTC Global Summit will offer a unique opportunity to network and create new synergies  among operators, associations, and institutions, developing the product, the offer and the potential of the Italian tourism ecosystem, and ultimately, to be increasingly competitive and successful.

stated that Italy prepares to host the WTTC’s 25th Global Summit, and it will be a celebration not only for its remarkable recovery from the pandemic but also the vibrant future of the entire Travel & Tourism sector.

Concerning numbers and performances, last year the tourism and travel sector contributed €228.5 billion to the Italian economy and supported 3.1 million jobs. Domestic spending hit €122.6 billion, while international visitor spending reached €55.2 billion.

With the right investment in connectivity, skills and promotion, Italy is poised to become the blueprint for tourism – led growth in Europe.

Looking ahead, the World Travel & Tourism Council forecasts that the sector will contribute €282.6 billion to Italy’s economy by 2035, 12.2% of GDP, and supporting 3.7 million jobs. International visitor spending is projected to reach €78 billion,with domestic spending hitting €142.5 billion.
