Quito, Ecuador’s capital, located above the Guyallamba drainage basin on the slopes of the active Pichincha stravolcano in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2.850 metres, a centre that boasts a relevant cultural and historical heritage, constructed on the foundation of an ancient Incan city, highlighted by a thriving street art, plenty of colonian architecture, extensive parks and well know for its culinary offering was recognized as a smart and sustainable city by the United Nations.
Mayor Pabel Muñoz announced that the city received this recognition from the UN, a milestone that places Quito as the first centre in Ecuador to be awarded with this notable achievement.
Quito is a city that carries out various activities through initiatives led by the Ministry of Tourism and the Quito Tourism agency, focusing on promoting its cultural heritage, improving infrastructure, developing tourism proposals, promoting sustainable tourism, and organizing cultural events and festivals.
The Ecuatorian capital also employs strategies such as developing unique brands, using social media, and online tourist guides to atttact visitors but also to showcase its attractiveness to its residents. Digital platforms are used to promote the city with the goal to position Quito as an attractive and distinctive destination for travellers and to have a relevant visibility in the international landscape.
Secretary of Information and Communication Technologies, Alexandra Álava, explained that the city went through a United Nations evaluation process, in which more than 100 daily aspects were analyzed, centred on how technology, urban planning and public policies are used to improve the quality of life of Quito’s residents.
This recognition is reflected in the daily life of locals, through concrete actions and services. Citizens experience living in a smart city, in situations such as :
• When you connect to the free Wi - Fi points of the Municipality
• When you enter the Metro with your ID card or city card.
• When there is an use of solid waste to generate energy.
• When you can drink drinking water without worries.
• When you receive a ticket to visit a museum.
• When parents can review their children growth in the “wawamor” app.
• When you have the opportunity to fnish high school virtually and accelerated.
• When you can have access free medical at the Metropolitan Health Centres.
• When grandparents can participate to social life.
As part of this innovation process and the 3.001 works for the people of Quito, the Municipality is working on a new mobile application called “Mi Quito” (My Quito), through which citizens will have access to at least 80% of municipal procedures.
The Secretary of Information and Communication Technologies said that this application seeks to automate and simplifiy the management of services, including :
• Payment of property tax and licence plate.
• Traffic procedures : registration and infractions.
• Georeferencing of municipal services, such as parks and parking lots.
The official added that Quito's citizens will able to find in this application all the services and all the advantages offered by the city in one place.
