China announced that on 4th December 2025 it will inaugurate the world’s longest air route connecting Shanghai, Chinese city on central coast and Buenos Aires, the capital and largest centre of Argentina, according to China Daily.
The new service operated by China Eastern Airlines branded as China Eastern, one of the three major airlines in the country along with Air China and China Southern Airlines, headquartered in Changning, Shanghai is part of the internationalisation of Chinese airlines, which are working to expand beyond the domestic market.
Set to operate twice weekly the flight between Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires, the flight will have a two - hour stopover in Auckland, a large metropolitan city in the North Island of New Zealand.
The journey will span 20.000 kilometres and reduce travel between the two cities from 30 to 25 hours, establishing the first - ever commercial connection between two antipodal points of the globe.
Until now, the record was held by the Beijing - São Paulo route via Madrid, linking China and Brazil but this new operation will position the carrier as a leader in ultra - long - haul services.
The twice - weekly route presents a logistical challenge in terms of transoceanic operations, aircraft maintenance, and extended crew shifts, however it is expected to boost airline revenues while offering passengers benefits such as visa - free transit in Auckland and reduced jet lag.
Experts note that this development strengthens the global capacity of China’s civil aviation sector and consolidates the country’s presence in distant markets such as South America.
