The Ethiopian Government through its Ministry of Finance has signed a two year, €1.7 million agreement with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, a project aimed to support post - conflict recovery and heritage conservation in the Wukro - Gheralta Belt of Tigray, the northermost regional state in the country.
The area home of extraordinary cultural treasures is well known for its 120 rock - strewn churches in the Gheralta Mountains, largely monolith, with designs that appear partly inspired by classical architecture, stunning attractions for their rich historical and cultural value often located on top of stacks or very steep hills for historical reasons of protection during sieges, and some of them perhaps dating back to the 8th century.
The agreement Signed in the capital of the country, Addis Ababa on 13th October 2025 by State Minister Semereta Sewasew and Italy’s Ambassador Agostino Palese, marks a renewed phase of Ethiopia - Italy cooperation, with both sides citing culture and tourism as drivers of peace and growth. The signing also coincides with the conclusion of Ambassador Palese’s term in the African country.
The project, Supporting Community Resilience through Community - Based and Heritage Conservation, aligns with the Pretoria Peace Agreement’s recovery agenda and Ethiopia’s Ten Year Development Plan (2021 - 2030) focusing on sustainable livelihoods and cultural preservation.
The initiative will centre on the Wukro - Gheralta area with planned activities include restoring historical sites and developing inclusive, community - based tourism enterprises, enhancing eco - tourism, creating jobs and strengthen local resilience, positioning communities as custodians and beneficiaries of their heritage.
