The Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport, located 12 kilometres east of the city of San Miguel de Tucumán usually called simply Tucumán, the capital and largest city of Tucumán Province situated in northern Argentina, 1.311 kilometres from Buenos Aires, built in 1981 with its terminal inaugurated on 12th October 1986 begins a new stage with the beginning of the modernization and expansion works of its central building, within the framework of an ambitious project of US$50 million.
The works managed by Aeropuertos Argentina and the provincial Ministry of Works, Infrastructure and Public Transport, seek to position the Teniente Benjamín Matienzo International Airport of Tucumán as a modern, efficient, and competitive air hub within the national airport system.
The first tasks, which include the assembly of workshops and scaffolding begin this week without affecting the operation of the flights, marking the formal start of one of the most important infrastructure works for the connectivity of northern Argentina.
The plan aims to double the annual passenger capacity, reaching a potential of 1.6 million passengers and allowing the simultaneous operation of five flights. To achieve this, multiple buildings and operational improvements are planned such as :
• Expansion of surface area : from 8.600 to 10.000 m².
• Incorporation of two telescopic sleeves, totalling three.
• Expansion of the departure lounge, from 650 to 1.800 m².
• Expansion of the check – in area with 14 check – in counters.
• New baggage carousels, three in total, to optimize arrivals.
With this modernization, the airport is preparing to strengthen its strategic role in tourism and regional trade, consolidating itself as a key gateway to northern Argentina.
