Malaysia | Launched an Electrified Railway Line Connecting the North and South of the Country

Malaysia continues to boost the modernization of its infrastructure and national transport with the launch of the Gemas - Johor Bahru double - track electrified railway line, a project which completes the electric train network connecting the north and south of the country, which will help reduce travel time and promote sustainable development, according to Bernama, a news agency linked to the Malaysian government.

The development required high – precision engineering and construction in accordance with international with international standards, ensuring performance and efficiency.

Operated by Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM), the line from Gemas, Negeri, Sembilan to Johor Sentral, passing through Segamat, Kluang and Kulai includes 11 stations.

The official launch took place on December 12, 2025 at Kempas Barus Station located in Kempas, a suburb in Johor Bahru, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Johor, with the presence of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook, and other representatives.

With the Electric Train Service (ETS) network from north to south, passengers can now reduce the travel time between KL Sentral and JB Sentral to 4 hours and 20 minutes travelling on a train with speeds up to to 140 - 160 km/h and features like double tracking, modern six - coach trains (standard/business class)  bistro,  prayer room, and integrated development potential for economic growth along the route.

Key Features and Benefits of the Eclectrified Railway Line :

·       Full Network Completion: Connects the existing northern ETS to the south, creating a seamless electric link from Padang Besar to Johor Bahru.

·       Reduced Travel Time: Cuts KL - Johor journey to about 4.5 hours, much faster than diesel trains.

·       Modern Rolling Stock: Uses six – coach trains (5 standards, 1 business class) with amenities like plug points, a bistro, and prayer rooms.

·       Electrified Double - Track: The 192 km Gemas – Johor Bahru section is double – tracked, allowing for more frequent and reliable service.

·       Economic Catalyst: Stations are planned as new growth centres, boosting local economies and job opportunities.

·       Enhanced Comfort and Reliability: A cleaner, faster, and less stressful alternative to driving or flying for many.

·       Strategic Hub: Positions Johor Bahru as a stronger gateway, connecting Singapore’s upcoming RTS Link.

The Prime Minister highlighted the success of the implementation of the project, underlining the importance of this initiative within the national program, which aims at the development of a high - quality public transport system.

The Malaysian Premier added that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening a modern, efficient and high - quality public transport system, which brings tangible benefits to the people, aligned with the objectives of the 13th Malaysian Plan.
