Puerto Plata Destination Tourism Cluster (CTDPP) and the Dominican Association of Sports Tourism (ADOTURD) have signed an Interinstitutional Collaboration Framework Agreement to coordinate efforts, aligning local initiatives to boost sport tourism as a key strategy to diversify beyond traditional sun - and beach offerings in Puerto Plata. a very captivating destination known as the "Port of Silver", located on the Dominican Republic's northern Amber Coast. featuring a blend of unique colonial history, Victorian architecture, natural attractions and stunning beaches.
The agreement was signed by Birgitt Heinsen, President of CTDPP, and the President of AOTURD, Yerik Pérez, launching an initiative that aims to strengthen the northern region economy, promote social development, and create a long-– lasting positive legacy by hosting various sporting events.
Valid for three years and automatically renewable, the agreement outlines joint actions in promotion, tourism product development, institutional cooperation, training, and planning events.
The economic diversification plan focuses to establish sports tourism as an engine to reduce dependence of traditional tourism, creating revenue streams.
The strategy involves actively hosting varied sporting events, leveraging the region’s unique assets to attract both participants and spectators, a move based on infrastructure investment, a comprehensive regional development include infrastructure improvements, creation of a network of structures linked to hospitality, and a calendar of events, all actions planned to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and enhance the overall tourism product in Puerto Plata.
The alliance reinforces a unified regional agenda, positioning sports tourism as a sustainable growth driver for Puerto Plata and the northern region.
The President of CTDP highlighted that this partnership aligns Puerto Plata with a shared vision within the tourism sector, recognizing sports as a powerful driver of social and economic development, emphasizing the cluster’ s commitment to supporting sporting events as a key segment for positioning and enhancing the destination.
The President of ADOTURD stressed the importance of developing structured sporting event calendars supported by measurable indicators to assess their economic, tourism, and social impact.
