Tarrafal, Cape Verde | Started a Major Tourist Development in the City

Tarrafal, a city located in the northern part Santiago Island, Cape Verde, known for its scenic bay, beautiful beaches like Praia de Tarrafal, is the place a major tourist development recently started, the Charme Stephanie - Oceânica X, whose first stone has just been laid. 

The development is a major project consists of an integrated set of hotel and residences, fully incorporated into a hotel management system with an international brand aiming to boost local tourism with expanded accommodation, commercial spaces, restaurants. A conference hall, and a cinema/nightclub.  

The project is promoted by  Oceânica Group that has developed and managed several hotel and resort properties primarily located in Algarve, Portugal, and other residential properties in various locations, including Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

The new project aims to strengthen the local tourism offer, increase hotel capacity and contribute to the economic and social dynamism of the municipality.

According to representative of Oceânica Group, Chady Hojeige, quoted by Infopress, the work should have an estimated execution perios of three years, and the development already attracted international hotel brands for management for the modern amenities of the future establishment alongside traditional local craft.

The development, according to the Cape Verdean press, will have approximately 200 units, including hotel rooms and apartments of types T0, T1 and T2, integrated in the same concept of tourist exploration. In addition to the accommodation component, the project includes commercial spaces, catering, conference room, cinema and disco projection. 

At the laying of the first stone of the future tourist complex, the mayor of Tarrafal de Santiago, José dos Reis, considered that the investment confirms that the centre is a growing municipality and attractive to attract private investments. 

Cape Verde’s Minister of Infrastructure, Victor Coutinho, said that private initiative projects such as Charme Stephanie  - Oceânica X have a very positive impact on the promotion of tourism, especially when articulated with the Government’s incentives and public policies.

 A further highlight is the presence of hiking trails, offering opportunities to hike coastal paths or climb nearby volcanic hills like Monte Graciosa for panoramic views. 

Diving and snorkeling thanks to a rich marine life makes Tarrafal a great destination for underwater activities, with dive centres available. Fresh seafood, local produce, and vibrant markets, offer an authentic taste of Cape Verde. 

Tarrafal also boasts cultural and historical attractions such as Santo Amaro de Abade Church, a colonial style - church with an ornate interior, important for local devotion, Tarrafal Concentration Camp (Chao Bom), a significant historical site memorializing political prisoners from the Portuguese colonial era, and Traz - di - Munti Arts & Crafts Centre that promotes local art, ceramics, and traditional “pano di terra” (woven cloth).
