Day 6 / ALTOMONTE - LE CASTELLA -CAPO COLONNA -CROTONE- SANTA SEVERINA
After your breakfast,departure to Capo Rizzuto and visit the district of this town called "Le Castella",it is really beautiful with the Aragonese Castle, which stands on a of small island connected to the mainland by a thin isthmus.Le Castella is located on the Ionian coast of Calabria, 10 km from Isola di Capo Rizzuto and overlooking the bay with the old Aragonese castle.In 1536, the famous Berber corsair Khayr al-Din Barbarossa kidnapped Giovanni Dionigi Galeni, who became famous as an admiral and privateer by the name of Ali Paşa Uluc.This place was chosen as a film set for "L'Armata Brancaleone" and "The Gospel according to Matthew."Near the Aragonese castle where you can enjoy some excursions visiting the protected marine area of Capo Rizzuto.
Proceed to Capo Colonna and visit the beautiful ruins of the Temple dedicated to Hera Lacinia.Once its name was Lacinion or also "Cape Lacinium."and it is the promontory which determines the western Gulf of Taranto, where there was a temple dedicated to Hera Lacinia.It is also the famous place about the treaties between Rome and Carthage and considered as insuperable limit of Roman ships during the Punic wars.
Continue to Crotone,this town was an ancient important Greek colony and was one of the most important centers of Magna Graecia.A legend has it that the name derives from Crotone "Kroton", son of Aeacus, who was killed accidentally by his friend Heracles.These, to correct the mistake made and to honor the friend who had hosted him buried with solemn ceremony on the banks of the river near the tomb Esaro and then gave rise to the city to which he gave his name.The old town is developed in a maze of narrow alleys and squares up to the cathedral and the central square Pythagoras, the contact point between old and new town.
