Gran Caffè Gambrinus | Venerated Neapolitan Literary Cafe Since 1860.

Gran Caffè Gambrinus is a symbol of a sunny, lively and amazing Mediterranean city,a venerated Neapolitan literary Cafe since 1860 which has written in its kind  remarkable  pages of culture and history in the biggest Southern Italian metropolis.

Naples was a relevant Greek and Roman centre in ancient  times,Capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies during the time of the Bourbons and  before to be integrated in the Reign of Italy of the House of Savoy keeping all what was founded there but also what it was able to establish itself as that Cafe which became since its inception an absolute urban landmark.

It is from that year of the 19th century coincident with the reunification of the Italian Peninsula  that such sunny city re-discovered its marked creative Latin identity living a sort of renaissance in the shade of its Vesuvius that imposing volcano which from its picturesque summit dominates one of the most beautiful and photographed gulfs of the World.

It was a period in which was the right time to restart a new era which came with poets, writers, painters, composers and other artists who strongly wanted a new cycle linked to the most sublime artistic movements and extremely ready and enthusiast to highlight a joie de vivre focused to that desire to show all the world the enthusiastic and charismatic soul and spirit of a city which could offer new waves of magic times.

It is not a case that since then a mine of distinguished and talented characters was produced and they delighted with music, theatre and literature the Nation and including reaching international borders with  performances by illustrious artists who conquered the world in the Opera and those melodic sounds and songs which captured the attention of the globe.

In consequence to all that and to compete with all the most important cities of the northern Italy and the capital Rome due to such explosion of pure talent,Naples needed to have distinctive meeting point,a place in which artists and figures linked to the highest cultural spheres could have their spaces.

The city did not have a defined headquarter in terms of an establishment in which they could discuss, exchanging opinions, expressing their ideas, creating something or simply to have a social life in an iconic place having meetings which often generated something of extremely attractive to launch as a proposal.

The Gran Caffè Gambrinus opened its door as a perfect instrument to feed all that artistic hunger as through by magic it was a sort of pioneer in Naples regarding all that.It was an emerging reality in that time close to the post reunification of the country which brought political and cultural changes. That site created the perfect occasions to run towards a new successful lifestyle taking as example the most celebrated cities for excellence closely linked to the literary cafes.

Those examples to follow were mainly Paris,Vienna,London and in Italy,Rome,Milan,Venice but also Turin the latter city,Capital of the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia the Savoy Reign, birthplace and cradle of superb  ideas with its prestigious politicians and ministers such as Cavour, Balbo, Crispi and Giolitti a centre which also launched the bases sitting in those cafes of the new Kingdom of Italy.

Those distinctive cities in which born the trendy habit to frequent the Cafes, emblematic symbols were those places characterised by meetings of figures who represented a society,a city and a land and all what was linked to culture, art, literature, music, politic and intellectual life.

Naples desired with all its passion and enthusiasm all that and that Cafe was a a sort of great engine of a rebirth, protagonist of something missing there since a long time ago in periods often obscured by particular historic situations which sometimes did not give the chance to an artistic figure to emerge.

Gran Caffè Gambrinus in its kind was an unique environment in a city so rich of an immerse historical patrimony, magnificent Mediterranean landscapes and that mild climate which embraces that centre and  a further warm and shining ray of sun came from that Cafe was.

In a very short time it started to be frequented by prominent people of every kind of art and despite those previously mentioned examples taken as inspiration,it born and kept its typical and traditional Neapolitan identity with its marked spirit.

Venerated for its always welcoming atmosphere with a captivating air mixing a vague belle epoque Parisienne with a distinctive and strong Italian style, its luminous halls,an attentive and kind service in terms of hospitality was a winning key opening its doors and becoming the prestigious, famous, elegant and  and charming lounge of a city which probably was waiting for that time since a long time before but as many Neapolitans say better late than never.

That charismatic establishment is situated in the historical centre of the city and for all what it represented since its opening it is an icon well known in the entire Naples which elevated that establishment as a flag to wave with pride and as a jewel to show.

Located in one of the most stylish, exclusive and fascinating corners of the urban core, concretely in Via Chiaia next to the busy square Piazza Trento Trieste and close to the other wide and majestic Piazza del Plebiscito, that area represents the captivating noble hallway of the ancient Hellenic Neapolis.

The mentioned Piazza del Plebiscito  next to the Cafe is that stunning and large monumental square which adopted in its marvellous set such new landmark so close to the majestic Basilica di San Francesco da Paola, the marvellous Palazzo Reale, the Royal Palace and with the presence of historic buildings such as Palazzo Salerno and Palazzo della Prefettura, that location was undoubedtly a great choice to establishing that Cafe in a set which is a stunning window of art.

Gran Caffé Gambrinus when opened immediately became the haven and favourite reference of celebrities and members of the highest society of Naples who flocked there fascinated to have in their birthplace such marvellous place in the heart of the city.

That square always packed by people of every social class who enjoyed a walk in that Neapolitan focal point also filled by tourists and curious increased the  incoming flows of Gran Caffè Gambrinus with a notable affluence to admire a further presence of a distinctive site in that historic scenery.

Many people also took the excuse for a further walk to see that establishment and who was inside once more in a day due that  in its kind represented the local artistic headquarter of the cultural sphere of Naples in their meetings with several personalities often sitting there enjoying an aromatic coffee or a glass of a fine liquor and focused on their long philosophical and artistic chats.

The name of the Cafe was inspired by that of Joannus Primus, King of Flanders, the legendary inventor of the beer which was a kind of sensational idea in terms of start up, marketing and promotion,a denomination reminiscent to an iconic figure representing a drink,a famed beverage loved by a multitude of people.

That prestigious Neapolitan establishment unique in its kind and different than others could be considered the alter ego of the famous and prestigious Venetian Cafes such as Caffè Florian (I wrote a post about this iconic Establishment) and Caffè Quadri  or the Roman Gran Caffè Greco (I wrote something about it too),all older than, with another reality and history which were so famous during the period of the Belle Epoque culture continuing  nowadays to be famed worldwide and terms of comparisons by many Neapolitans.

Despite that the citizens of that city who love to compare it considered that does not matter we have Gran Caffè Gambrinus which is the best, always with a veiled, lovely and genuine chauvinism and also for that it gain fame in a Naples also with that local promotion, the locals always loves looking for comparisons but at the end they love and appreciate in many cases all what their city has and offers.

Founded by entrepreneur Vincenzo Apuzzo, immediately that site had a great feedback by people of all walks of life, drawn from the work of the best bakers, ice cream, and the best bartenders from all over Europe.

The philosophy of the founder was not only offering a stylish and enchanting interior but the prestige had to be highlighted by the highest and most professional catering and hospitality services with a staff highly prepared and with an innate skill of good manners and style.

Quickly the Cafe won thanks to all that the favour of the Savoy Royal Family who found in that place one of the most pleasant places in the city so loved to spend great times enjoying the list of coffees and products that establishment offered and in addition they were also served with style and obviously highly revered.

Those stops at the Cafe were for the King Vittorio Emanuele II  also a sort of sweet prelude before to start his loved and favourite promenade along the striking maritime promenade Lungomare Toledo showing all the beauty of the gulf and the the city just two steps from that establishment.

In a subsequent management period,Mario Apuzzo Vacca, in the years 1889 and 1890 had the great and brilliant idea to call the best Neapolitan impressionists to vitalise more the Cafe giving it also a more distinctive artistic imprint with their works and were called  Vincenzo Caprile, Caprile,Giuseppe Casciaro,Attilio Pratella Luca Postiglione,Vincenzo Migliaro,Vincenzo Volpe,Eduardo Matania among others.

The project was focused despite the excellent results obtained 40 years to give a further stronger local identity and image to such place with the art as protagonist. The local was so embellished by stunning works in a splendid  Art Nouveau style, with relevant stuccoes, scenic statues and beautiful paintings of the late 19th century made by all those important characters.

Painted for the most by Caprile who was one the prominent and most charismatic figures in that time and  more involved and engaged in the artistic development of the Gran Caffè Gambrinus,he was also mainly called more than others because he always had many new ideas and a strong and trendy innovative spirit.

The Cafe was arranged as a sort of Art Gallery with preciously restored environments and all that arouse the admiration all around the world. Many tourists who visited the city received a sort of automatic input at first sight and it became as a must to stop in such charming place also for a simple coffee.

The new inauguration took place on 3rd November 1890,and another interesting aspect which characterised that site was a total use of electricity which certainly improved all the services. One of the highlights you will immediately notice once you are coming in that prestigious establishment,in the signboard, stood the name of the King, inventor of the beer on which you can read Caffé Gambrinus Birreria, Caffé Gambrinus Brewery in which there was the suggestion to serve beer and coffee.

A mixture of cultures in drinks as well, one typically Italian, the coffee,a warm beverage which represents in its kind also the Neapolitan spirit to enjoy social times while the other mainly and traditionally from Central and Northern Europe with the same aims and purposes but traditionally from a different geographic latitudes.

That idea was carefully studied in a sort of a targeted operation of marketing focused to attract clients from different countries and lovers of that blond drink, having an alternative to offer than the traditional delicious coffee and transforming in that way the Cafe also in a cosmopolitan meeting point.

The result was successful and many European visitors  returned  home with very pleasant memories thanks to the quality of products served and a kind and attentive service and obviously informing friends and other people with also in their hearts naturally the desire to return there in the sunny Naples and in that site once again.

Gran Caffé Gambrinus gave a warm welcome to many prominent people,a really long list but worth to be mentioned Crispi,Miraglia,Nicotera,Labriola and the elite of the high Neapolitan Social Class families consisting in the Caracciolo, Filangieri,  Pignatelli, and Sirignano among others. Also artists and poets such as  D´Annunzio, Bovio, Marinelli,Bovio,Di Giacomo and Serao  were particularly attracted by such divine place becoming soon usual guests.A very loyal customer was undoubtedly Gabriele D´Annunzio who fell in love with that place and according to some sources that famed  writer from Pescara developed sat at the tables of the Cafe a famous poetry ; A  Vucchella. Vucchella.

Soon other notorious artists such as Ernest Hemingway,Oscar Wilde,Jean Paul Sartre and Benedetto Croce could not resist to the captivating charm of such enchanting place and often frequented that Neapolitan icon entering in the long C.V. or hall of fame of all the notorious characters who sat at the tables of the legendary Gran Caffè Gambrinus.

Oscar Wilde as the distinguished Abruzzo´s artist D´Annunzio was frequently seen there, the Irish literature master had in that cafe a special attraction as a favourite haven to enlarge his imaginative inspirations spending long times sitting there

.The talented writer from Ireland during his trips and stays in Naples had as a sort sort of veneration of such cafe and he spent there hours and hours contemplating every detail of that Art Gallery as hypnotised by the artistic scenery and of all what there was all around him.

That magic environment was for him also peaceful break continuing to be charmed by a place representing a city which he loved more than others. With sublime sensations Wilde enjoyed a glass of Whisky or an aromatic Neapolitan coffee looking at those paintings on the walls depicting corners which for him were already familiar and unique.Probably that refuge was for the Irish artist the spark of his engine to generate ideas and inspirations simply admiring the Vesuvius, the gulf ant the maritime views of Mergellina painted there.

During the Fascist period the Gran Caffe Gambrinus was closed by the Prefect for being a meeting place for anti-fascists,even though the official reason for closing was an excuse indeed quite remarkable. That happened because the wife of the Prefect could not sleep due to the noise coming from there on the ground floor of the building in which she lived.

The buildings in that corner of the city were intended to house a bank and some offices,at least until that Michele Sergio the new manager could not reopen the Cafe reoccupying part of the rooms, the ones which looked out onto the nearest square Piazza Trento Trieste.

In the interior you can feel today the charm of the past and the addition of more recent details which gave it a very fascinating atmosphere. You will notice inside a very fine presence of big stylish mirrors placed in strategic points of the layout to increase luminosity, appeal, stylish aesthetic image but also generating the illusion to be in a wider space.

The arrangement is simply stunning with spaces filled by images depicting scenes of pure mythology and superb architectonic elements as classical columns giving in some corners the sensation to relive the times of the Hellenistic and Roman periods which transmit in their kind the myths of remote times of a past which Naples lived.

Large paintings of outdoor daily Neapolitan life are other further details creating a visual atmosphere to enter in contact with the city combined to other elements in perfect harmony thanks to their selected setting. placement. You will notice a mixture of styles but all harmoniously jointed and arranged in a very clever way.Nothing is bizarre or peculiar all was attentively studied searching and reaching a sort of total sublimation of the interiors.

All that was created to generate to the view of the customer the most pleasant sensations, transmitting in a welcoming way that you are in in a very special place also reflecting the true and real Naples, admiring
looking out at the Gulf of Naples, from Posillipo to Via Caracciolo,or Mergellina with those paintings depicting the city with such places represented in those works.

Fishermen life, elegant women strolling along the streets are other subjects representing the local society depicted in other images which give more colour and a marked identity.A very scenic way next to architectonic lines with vaults and arcades forming a captivating frame as introducing in a sort of majestic grandeur,an open gateway to the pure beauty of a city illustrated in a very inviting environment.

Baroque and vague post Renaissance decorations on the sinuous ceilings completed by neoclassical details in the outlines, crystal chandeliers which emit a great luminosity to the halls highlighted by a perfect arrangement of stylish rounded tables combined with elegant chairs covered by velvet burgundy fabric.

Very scenic is the perspective of the arched vaults in succession leading to the halls La Caffetteria and in the Sala da Tea with furthermore the presence of allegoric statues on the walls which complete a more than captivating scenery.

Another further detail  and even one of the late 19th century is concretely a work representing an image of a woman smoking a cigarette, something particular, including glamorous in a soft contrast with other subjects.
That representation could transmit relax, charm,a female figure which feel herself very comfortable in that environment.

That image is in its kind something captivating,it has a keen artistic sense to transmit great feelings and someone with a deep aesthetic taste and with a full vision of artistic representations also in the most smallest details will appreciate that.

What is simply impressive in that Cafe is that all those elements some so far and different for style are greatly assembled in a pretty large set set but no one of them ruin or break the aspect and all is perfectly balanced and so attractive at first sight.
Artists, painters, intellectuals, politicians, celebrities,Kings and Queens but also anonymous people loved and love to stand in a unique foyer,a gallery of art by living on the edge of a musical life from the unforgettable Viennese orchestras to traditional Neapolitan songs with a quality product and service always at the top level.

Among those tables, people never lost the desire to go and sit there,to enjoy a coffee,a drink,a fine pastry, a delicious cocktail,or a shot of typical Limoncello. That iconic site never lost its charm and appeal because in its innovation during its history has always added a touch of refined and fashionable style with the most divine talent of the hands of someone who wanted to keep alive the eternal name of that venerated landmark.

Restored in different periods,in a summary, that Neapolitan Cafe has kept in its aspect the essence of its glorious past well integrated in the present and what is most important is that it never was considered demodé and it is now one of the busiest and famed places in Naples.

Visited Both by intellectuals according the old tradition and of course by tourists who can not resist to such magnetic place,Gran Caffé Gambrinus was and is one of the vital and cultural centres of the city in its kind including it received several visits by the Presidents of the Italian Republic.

In the most recent times after the presence of those great artists of the past and loyal clients of the Cafe the history did not change and stop and that glorious establishment continued to be a delightful destination of important figures.Constantly visited by presidents in their times it is enough to mention some of them such as Ronald Reagan, François Mitterand, Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro,Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Giorgio Napolitano among others.

Also Romano Prodi and Silvio Berlusconi have repeatedly stopped there to enjoy a cup of coffee during their stays in Naples and another prominent guest during his visits in the city of the Vesuvius was Bill Clinton a declared lover of such place.
